The Palestinian European Youth Alliance conducted on April 4 an online seminar on Palestinian youth and societal engagement in Europe. The seminar was attended by a number of young Palestinians in Europe.

AlSharq AlAwsat reported on April 6 that Palestinian youth are demanding major electoral reforms ahead of the first elections in 15 years. Youth in Palestine have been actively forging their engagement in the elections, which are planned to be held on May 22. The 15 year drought has alienated youth from the political scene, as none of those under 34 years old have ever voted before. Many electoral lists, especially those involving youth, are capitalizing on that, with one candidate calling youth “the generation that never elected its representatives”.

Albayan reported on April 7 that Palestinian youth have visited the central elections committee with manyquestions related to the electoral lists and youth participation in elections. Youth in Palestine have faced political marginalization, and for the vast majority of them, this will be their first elections. Thus, youth are excited for the elections, but they are not entirely confident in the electoral lists, especially those led by major political parties.

The Iraqi Parliamentary Development Institute, in collaboration with Al-Amal Association, held a discussion session with the Youth and Sports Committee at the Iraqi Parliament on April 5. The session discussed the role of Iraqi youth in peacebuilding in Iraq. The attendees agreed that Iraqi youth can, if invested in, drive Iraq forward and contribute positively to its development. They also added that to do so, youth need to be well supported, across all sectors. The head of the Youth and Sports Committee at the Parliament asserted that supporting youth is their main goal, as the Committee works on conducting partnerships with multiple institutions to support their goal.

Hiba Press published on April 6 an article titled “In Red: the Reality of Moroccan Youth Today Reflects the Failures of Government Programs”. The article delved into many important factors that culminate in the current conditions of Moroccan youth. For instance, near 28.5% of Moroccan youth are neither employed nor in education, which means about 1.7 million young Moroccans rely on their families. The article explains that government programs have not helped youth acquire new skills or to become better positioned for the labor market, instead, such programs have merely been for “show”. Another troubling point is that near 66% of Moroccan youth are seriously considering emigration. The article explores many other societal and economic components that reflect negatively on the development of youth.

El País reported on April 7 that youth from Arab countries are increasing considering emigration due to the overwhelming frustration they are feeling in their own countries. The report cites the results of a survey conducted by ASDA’A-BCW, which found that 40% of youth identify religion as their main driver of identity. Nonetheless, they do not support governments that define themselves in religion. Instead, they prefer governments that are much less corrupt and much more efficient and capable of creating jobs. Further, 87% stated their concern about unemployment, with over half of the sample do not believe that their governments are capable of resolving any of their problems. The report concludes by stating that in some instances, youth take to the streets to voice their concerns while in other cases, they simply take planes or boats and leave their countries altogether.

Said bin Aicha wrote on April 9 an article titled “The Political Actor and Cinematic Actor”. In this article, bin Aicha addresses the aging parliamentarians in the Moroccan Parliament, especially those who always receive the support of their parties, but once they make it to Parliament, they do not offer any value. The author argues that these aging MPs are suppressing any prospects for younger candidates, which reflects a bigger trend that “politics is not for youth”, who are always told “you have your quota”. The author concludes that cinematic actors have their directors and their plots to navigate their fates, but aging political actors are not going to add value to the political scene even if they “dye” their hair to look younger

Anadolu Agency reported on April 7 that Iranian youth are skeptical about the 25-year strategic cooperation agreement between Iran and China, which was signed on March 27 as part of China’s “Belt and Road” Initiative, a $400 billion deal. Many young Iranians voiced their skepticism toward the agreement, many of whom cited the opacity of the terms, lack of regard to public opinion, and mistrust in China’s agenda.

Alalam TV aired an episode of “Nawafeth” that discussed the main concerns facing youth in the region along with the central question of why youth long for the west. The guest experts stated that these concerns encompass all aspects of daily life, including political, economic, and health issues. They also reasoned that many young people in the region are lost and demotivated due to the lack of opportunities. The experts reasoned that to improve their conditions, both governments and youth themselves have central roles to play.

Kitabat published on April 9 a report about Iraqi youth and their current conditions. While the majority of Iraq’s youth were not old enough to comprehend the realities of the former regime, Iraqi youth nowadays are suffering from lack of opportunities and deteriorating livelihood conditions, mixed with a corrupt political reality along with sectarianism and absence of political rights. 60% of Iraq’s population is under 25 and unemployment has reached 36% among this group. Lack of opportunities have driven young Iraqis toward armed groups, and for those who look to leave Iraq in search of education, many international universities do not acknowledge Iraqi degrees. All of these realities are driving young Iraqis to demonstrate in the streets.

The Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) held an international seminar on April 8 in Morocco on “the Skills and Professions of Tomorrow”. The director of ICESCO recalled that many studies confirm that 60% of current professions will no longer be relevant in the future due to automatization and other advancements in technology. Given the conflict in Yemen, the Houthis blamed the Saudi-Emirati alliance for allowing drugs to pass through Yemen’s borders since the alliance controls all land and seaports since March 2015. However, the internationally recognized government stated that the majority of the shipments they seized in its areas were headed to the Houthi-controlled areas, as they use that to finance their operations. The report states that there has been a significant increase in the amount of drugs seized over the past year. While security authorities used to seize an average of tens of kg, nowadays the amount is between 4-5 tons.
