Politics and Political Engagement

Over the past week, protests in Palestine continued, as Israeli police continue to try to evict Palestinian families from their homes in Shikh Jarrah. Israeli police have repeatedly fired a foul-smelling liquid known as skunk water that lingers through the night to try to disperse the demonstrators. Later that week, Israel launched a military campaign against Gaza, killing at least 20 people, nine of which are children.

Palestinian youth in Yafa organized demonstrations and stood their ground in support and solidarity for the protests in Sheikh Jarrah and Jerusalem.

Alquds newspaper wrote on May 12 that the ongoing demonstrations in many Arab towns in Palestine and in many countries in the MENA region in solidarity with the Palestinians are sparked by the accumulations of many drivers which led to a massive sense of depression. These drivers include: (1) the fear of limiting the freedom of worship and religion, (2) the conflict in Sheikh Jarrah Neighborhood, (3) Ramadan, (4) youth, (5) holding the demonstrations in cities where Arabs and Jews live together, and (6) the use of social media. Further, the report delves deeper that youth were highly present in these demonstrations who jeered Israel’s policies and praised Palestinians’ endurance in their struggle. The report also highlighted that most youth nowadays are not in favor of the policies of the Palestinian Authorities in Ramallah or those in Gaza.

The Middle East Monitor reported that Palestinian youth in Jerusalem said that silence is not a choice when it comes to the Israeli aggression on the holy city and worshipers in the Al-Aqsa mosque during the last days of Ramadan. The report also indicates that hundreds of Palestinians were wounded in these attacks.

AlJazeera reported on May 15 on tens of solidarity protests around the world in support of Palestinians. These protests were sparked by the worst Israeli offensive on Palestinians since 2014, with more than 170 Palestinians (including 47 children) have been killed following Israel’s airstrikes on Gaza this past week. The report highlights demonstrations in Jordan, Iraq, Qatar, the United States, France, Canada, Spain, Lebanon, the United Kingdom, Germany, and many others.

AlJazeera published an article on May 13 by Omar Zahzah titled “Digital apartheid: Palestinians being Silenced on Social Media”. In this article, the author highlights that social media platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, Telegram, and Zoom are currently silencing Palestinians and reinforcing Israel’s erasure of Palestinians. The author highlights that Zoom has in fact denied events held by Palestinians to discuss their cause. He indicates that social media sites are furthering the interests and agenda of the government that is attacking the Palestinians rather than amplifying their righteous struggle and their right to resist violence and displacement.

Protesters in the province of Al Zarqa in Jordan gathered earlier on May 14th, demonstrating in solidarity with Palestine and Jerusalem. Protesters later boarded buses, organized for departure to the Jordanian-Palestinian border where they will demonstrate in solidarity with the protesters in Palestine.

During protests on May 12 in Khartoum, where hundreds of people gathered in front of the Army headquarters to demand the overthrow of President Omar al-Bashir, two people were killed, and dozens injured. Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok denounced the killing of the protesters and called against the use of live ammunition against peaceful protesters. Protesters called for further protests if the government does not meet their demands, which included the arrest of those who assassinated protesters in 2019.

Al-Arabiya reported on May 12 that the American embassy in Khartoum, Sudan has asked the Sudanese authorities to hold those responsible for using weapons against demonstrators accountable. A number of Sudanese youth have protested near the headquarters of the General Sudanese Army. It was reported that the authorities responded with guns, which led to the death of many of the protesters.

Economics and Entrepreneurship

The delegation of the Coordination of Youth Parties and Politicians in Egypt met on May 10 to discuss last period's trading and exchange sessions and addressed some of the challenges they faced. The youth emphasized the role those small businesses play in the country's economy and the trade market. Members also addressed the legislation and governing rules of trade when working in stock exchange and presented a number of amendments to improve advertising campaigns.

Conflict

Middle East Eye reported on the recent Israeli attacks against Gaza, as the death toll continued to rise, reaching 26 people, according to Gaza's health ministry.

Meanwhile, in Jerusalem, attacks against protesters continued, where at least 80 people were injured, including minors and a one-year-old, and 14 were taken to hospital, the Palestine Red Crescent said. Israeli police said at least one officer was hurt. At least 205 Palestinians and 18 Israeli officers were injured in Friday’s confrontations, which drew international condemnations and calls for calm.

Israeli forces conducted a number of arrests, most prominently the recent arrest of Maryam Al-Afifi, who broke the internet with her smile. Al-Afifi, who has since been released, is a member of the Palestine Youth Orchestra and was arrested during a protest against the imminent forcible eviction of residents of the occupied East Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah.

Al Jazeera continues to provide live updates of the events that are unfolding in Gaza, where currently, the death toll has risen to 140, including 40 children.

Reuters reported on May 14 that a Lebanese man was shot and killed by Israeli troops after he and others protesting in support of Palestinians tried to cross a security fence on the border with Israel, Lebanon's state news agency NNA reported. Lebanese President Michel Aoun said in a statement he "strongly condemned the crime committed by Israeli forces". The dead man was named as Mohamed Tahan, aged 21.

On May 9, Middle East Eye reported that hundreds of protesters attempted to storm the Iranian consulate in the holy city of Karbala, raging against the assassination of a prominent activist, protest leaders and officials. Gunmen on a motorbike targeted Ihab al-Wazni in Karbala early Sunday, shooting the protest leader dead in front of his home in the city centre. These forms of attacks against protesters and politicians that stand in solidarity with the October revolution have since been common. Hours after Wazni's killing, journalist Ahmed Hassan was shot with ""two bullets in the head and one in the shoulder"" and had to be transported to a hospital in the capital that specialized in neurological surgery, according to AFP.

As Iraq grapples with a fresh COVID-19 wave, with an economy and infrastructure left shattered by decades of war and mismanagement, the grievances of the protesters remain unaddressed. And with the upcoming elections, scare tactics such as assassinations and attacks against voter registration centers continue to rise, aiming to intimidate voter turnout and those who hope to speak out against the government.

Al-Arabiya published an article by Farouq Yousef on May 14 titled “What is the Secret behind Daesh’s Continuity in Iraq?” In this article, Yousef draws on connections between Daesh’s emergence and formed Iraqi PM Nouri Al-Maliki’s vision for Mosul, which was rather inspired by Iran’s vision for the future of Iraq. The author raises an important question, he asks “were Mosul’s youth obliged to resist Daesh for the sake of Al-Maliki whose state was humiliating them on daily basis?” He also adds that Al-Maliki’s policies which institutionalized sectarianism provided an incubating environment for Daesh. At the same time, youth were caught in the midst of all of that.

Education

A report from Morocco suggests that by the end of 2020, there were near 85,000 prisoners, the majority of whom were youth aged 20-30 (about 43.5%). The report states that education levels among these prisoners tend to be very low, as near 12,000 prisoners are completely illiterate and another 38,000 prisoners have not even completed their elementary education.

Environment

Luna Khalil wrote an article for Borgen Magazine titled “Bedouins Without Borders Helps the Bedouins”. In this article, she provides a historic overview of Bedouins in the MENA region, who tend to be excluded or overlooked from sociopolitical spaces in their countries. She also highlights the work “Bedouins Without Borders” have been doing, especially in establishing the Bedouin Data Bank, which collects basic information along with a visualizing map to better understand their movements over time. Bedouins Without Borders have also trained Bedouin youth to support the documentation efforts, under their Alfursan initiative. The author also underlines the massive challenges Bedouins face due to climate change, as water shortages and commercialization of desert areas are pushing them away from their ways of living.

COVID-19

Casa 24 reported that a number of Moroccan youth in Casablanca have led an initiative to encourage fellow Moroccans to get vaccinated. They painted walls and produced different artwork to raise awareness on the importance of taking the COVID-19 Vaccine.
