Politics and Political Engagement
* Switzerland hosted the Middle East-Mediterranean Youth Forum in the southern city of Lugano on August 24 to discuss the importance of supporting youth in the region. Thirty young men and women attended the summit in person and hundreds of others participated online. The Swiss foreign minister met with the Omani foreign minister before the summit.
* The Palestinian Youth Movement and other organizations protested in front of the White House on August 26 against a visit by Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett. The protesters called for sanctions against Israel and an end to US military and diplomatic support.
* Palestinian youth in Gaza continued protests against the blockade this week, leading to dozens of injuries after occupation forces used live fire against the demonstrators. A 12-year-old Palestinian died from his wounds on August 28 from previous protests. Protesters are demanding Israel ease restrictions under the blockade imposed in 2007. Occupation forces have also carried out airstrikes against Gaza in the past week.
* In an article on August 28, Al-Sharq Strategic Research claimed it discovered a Facebook campaign encouraging youth to support President Kais Saied in the two weeks before his “coup” on July 25. The report said a series of Facebook pages and accounts used disinformation and popular hashtags to boost the president and target his opponents from July 12-25.
* A number of young men and women are preparing to run in Morocco’s upcoming parliamentary elections, according to the Moroccan Observatory for Political Participation, which described the development as positive, according to an article from Le Site Info on August 28. Morocco will hold legislative and municipal elections on September 8.

* استضافت سويسرا منتدى شباب الشرق الأوسط – البحر الأبيض المتوسط في مدينة لوغانو الجنوبية في 24 آب / أغسطس لمناقشة أهمية دعم الشباب في المنطقة. حضر المؤتمر ثلاثون شابا وشابة بشكل وجاهي وشارك مئات آخرين عبر الإنترنت. التقى وزير الخارجية السويسري بوزير الخارجية العماني قبل القمة.
* احتجت حركة الشباب الفلسطيني ومنظمات أخرى أمام البيت الأبيض في 26 آب / أغسطس على زيارة رئيس الوزراء الإسرائيلي نفتالي بينيت. وطالب المتظاهرون بفرض عقوبات على إسرائيل وإنهاء الدعم العسكري والدبلوماسي الأمريكي.
* استمر الشباب الفلسطيني في غزة احتجاجاتهم على الحصار هذا الأسبوع، وتعرض العشرات إلى إصابات مختلفة بعد أن استخدمت قوات الاحتلال الرصاص الحي ضد المتظاهرين. توفى فلسطيني يبلغ من العمر 12 عاماً متأثرا بجراحه في 28 آب / أغسطس جراء احتجاجات سابقة. يطالب المتظاهرون إسرائيل بتخفيف القيود تحت الحصار المفروض منذ عام 2007. كما نفذت قوات الاحتلال غارات جوية على غزة في الأسبوع الماضي.
* في مقالة بتاريخ 28 آب / أغسطس، زعمت صحيفة الشرق للأبحاث الاستراتيجية أنها اكتشفت حملة على فيسبوك تشجع الشباب التونسيين على دعم للرئيس قيس سعيد في الأسبوعين قبل "انقلابه" في 25 تموز / يوليو. وذكر التقرير أن سلسلة من الصفحات والحسابات على فيسبوك استخدمت معلومات مضللة وهاشتاغات شعبية لتعزيز الرئيس واستهداف خصومه من 12 إلى 25 تموز / يوليو.
* يستعد عدد من الشبان والشابات لخوض الانتخابات البرلمانية المغربية المقبلة، بحسب المرصد المغربي للمشاركة السياسية، الذي وصف التطور بأنه إيجابي، بحسب مقال نشرته صحيفة لو سيت انفو يوم 28 آب / أغسطس. وسيجري المغرب انتخابات تشريعية وبلدية يوم 8 أيلول / سبتمبر المقبل.
Economics and Entrepreneurship
* In an article on August 28, Fintech Times discussed the role of the technology sector in empowering youth in the Middle East and North Africa. The article claims technology could help provide opportunities to combat youth unemployment and improve private sector development. Gulf countries are already prioritizing technology in their economic development strategies.
* The Arab Bank launched its corporate accelerator program “AB Accelerator” in Egypt that is focused on supporting innovation and using emerging technologies within the finance sector to support entrepreneurs, especially youth. The bank previously launched the program in Jordan in 2018 and is now looking to support entrepreneurs and the “fintech” sector in Egypt. Part of the bank’s mission is to support youth capacity building, innovation, and employment.
* A group of young Arabs in Istanbul launched the Istanbul Entrepreneurship Core on August 29 that aims to support entrepreneurship with the sponsorship of businessmen and international organizations. Core Istanbul will launch an incubation program targeting 40 Arab startups a year in Turkey with full advisory support and a free workspace, in addition to connecting them to a network of investors.

* ناقشت صحيفة فينتيك تايمز في مقالة يوم 28 آب / أغسطس دور قطاع التكنولوجيا في تمكين الشباب في منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا. تزعم المقالة أن التكنولوجيا يمكن أن تساعد في توفير فرص لمكافحة بطالة الشباب وتحسين تنمية القطاع الخاص. وتعطي دول الخليج بالفعل الأولوية للتكنولوجيا في استراتيجيات التنمية الاقتصادية الخاصة بها.
* أطلق البنك العربي برنامج تسريع الأعمال "AB Accelerator" في مصر الذي يركز على دعم الابتكار واستخدام التقنيات الناشئة في قطاع التمويل لدعم رواد الأعمال وخاصة الشباب. أطلق البنك البرنامج سابقاً في الأردن في عام 2018 ويتطلع الآن إلى دعم رواد الأعمال وقطاع "التكنولوجيا المالية" في مصر. جزء من مهمة البنك هو دعم بناء قدرات الشباب بالإضافة إلى الابتكار والتوظيف.
* أطلقت مجموعة من الشباب العرب في اسطنبول مبادرة كور إسطنبول لريادة الاعمال في 29 آب / أغسطس التي تهدف إلى دعم ريادة الأعمال برعاية رجال الأعمال والمنظمات الدولية. وستطلق كور إسطنبول برنامج احتضان يستهدف 40 شركة عربية ناشئة سنوياً في تركيا بدعم استشاري كامل ومساحة عمل مجانية بالإضافة إلى ربطها بشبكة من المستثمرين.
Conflict
* The executive director of UNICEF spoke about the conflict in Yemen during a UN Security Council meeting on August 23. She talked about how violence and destruction continue to impact the lives of children, with more than 1.6 million children displaced this year.
* A report from French magazine GEO on August 24 describes the cultivation of cannabis and production of hashish in the Rif region of Morocco and how drug traffickers transport the product to Europe and other markets. The report notes that Moroccan hashish has become popular with young people in Europe and the Arab World.
* The UN identified a total of 26,425 violations against children in conflict situations last year and over 266,000 violations in conflicts across Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America over the past 16 years, according to UN officials on August 26. The UN Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict presented her annual report to the UN General Assembly on August 23 calling for the protection of children in conflict situations, including Syria and Yemen.
* UNICEF published its monthly situation report on the conflict in Syria on August 26, noting an escalation in hostilities in Daraa and northwest Syria. Fighting in Daraa killed at least four children in July, while fighting in northwest Syria killed or injured at least 45 children. UNICEF is in need of $330.8 million this year to provide assistance to 9.1 million people across Syria, including 5.5 million children.

* تحدثت المديرة التنفيذية لليونيسف عن الصراع في اليمن خلال اجتماع لمجلس الأمن الدولي في 23 آب / أغسطس. وتحدثت عن استمرار تأثير العنف والدمار على حياة الأطفال حيث نزح أكثر من 1.6 مليون طفل في هذا العام.

Development
* The African Development Bank approved eight project proposals in June and July as part of its Jobs for Youth in Africa Strategy that will provide more than $7.3 million in funding and create an estimated 20,000 jobs across the continent. Projects to create jobs will include Egypt and Morocco, among other African countries.

* وافق بنك التنمية الأفريقي على ثمانية مقترحات مشاريع في حزيران / يونيو وتموز / يوليو الماضيين كجزء من استراتيجيته الخاصة بالوظائف للشباب في إفريقيا والتي ستوفر أكثر من 7.3 مليون دولار في التمويل وستخلق ما يقدر بنحو 20 ألف فرصة عمل في جميع أنحاء القارة. وستشمل مشروعات خلق الوظائف مصر والمغرب، من بين دول أفريقية أخرى.
Education
* The Forum for Alternatives to Morocco and the Deutsche Welle Academy announced a new project in Casablanca on August 24 to improve the integration of youth and women in Morocco through the media. The organizations plan to train 200 young men and women across six regions in the kingdom to enable them to obtain job opportunities.
* Students across Saudi Arabia returned to school for the first time in 18 months on August 29. The Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health are cooperating to ensure the safety of students, who must be vaccinated against COVID-19 to attend in person. Many parents welcomed the return to in-person learning, but still expressed concerns over the virus.
* The Egyptian Ministry of Youth launched the first activities of the Mediterranean Youth Academy Program on August 26 in Maadi that will focus on developing the skills and capabilities of Egyptian youth. The Minister of Youth and Sports Ashraf Sobhi discussed the importance of empowering youth, including them in national development, and preparing them to become future leaders.
التعليم
* أعلن منتدى بدائل المغرب وأكاديمية دويتشه فيله عن مشروع جديد في الدار البيضاء في المغرب في 24 آب / اغسطس لتحسين اندماج الشباب والنساء في المغرب من خلال وسائل الإعلام. تخطط المنظمات لتدريب 200 شاب وشابة في ست مناطق بالمملكة لتمكينهم من الحصول على فرص عمل.
* عاد الطلاب في جميع أنحاء المملكة العربية السعودية إلى المدرسة لأول مرة منذ 18 شهراً في 29 آب / أغسطس. تتعاون وزارة التعليم ووزارة الصحة لضمان سلامة الطلاب الذين يجب تطعيمهم ضد فايروس كورونا ليتمكنوا من الذهاب إلى المدارس بشكل وجاهي. رحب العديد من الآباء بالعودة إلى التعلم الشخصي لكنهم أعربوا عن مخاوفهم بشأن الفيروس.

Environment
* A report from UNICEF on August 22 warned that nearly 90% of children in the Middle East and North Africa live in areas of high or extremely high-water stress which severely affects their health, nutrition, and development. The Middle East and North Africa is the most water scarce region in the world. Conflict plays a role in worsening water scarcity, in addition to migration, population growth, poor water management, infrastructure problems, and bad governance.
* Algerian youth are helping to plant 1.5 million trees in areas affected by fires earlier this month as part of an initiative called “The Martyr’s Tree,” according to a Sky News article on August 23. Youth are working with local farmers in several provinces to plant fruit trees, pine trees, and other types to lift the spirit of the “lung of Algeria,” the forest regions affected by the fires.

COVID-19
* Cases of depression and anxiety among youth have doubled since the COVID-19 pandemic began, according to a study from the University of Calgary. The university based their analysis on 29 separate studies from around the world, including the Middle East.
