Economics and Entrepreneurship

Hafed Al-Ghwell wrote an article for Arab News in which he indicates that despite the fact that COVID-19 is rightfully a main priority, focusing on addressing the pandemic alone will not achieve much in solving the MENA region’s biggest and most pressing challenge: its desperate youth. With new challenges piling on top of older ones, youth – and women – are in troubled waters. Such challenges include climate change, access to education, and unemployment, among other economic challenges. Al-Ghwell also asserts that the rising prospects of social unrest, stagnant economies, and worsening poverty often leave Arab countries at the mercy a political class more concerned with its own survival than the state’s welfare.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health had announced the martyrdom Barghouti from the village of Kafr Ein, north of Ramallah (central West Bank), as the Israeli army shot him at the entrance to the village of Nabi Saleh, adjacent to his village. By virtue of his work as a night watchman, "the young man, Ma'alla, was surprised by the presence of the soldiers in front of him, and then they started to shine laser lights towards him, and then they released a police dog towards him, which began to bite him without stopping. Then, the occupation army took him to an unknown destination, and no one knows his whereabouts.”

They also arrested two other young Palestinians from the town of Beit Fajjar, south of Bethlehem, after they raided the homes of their relatives.

Education

Zainab Hamarsheh wrote an article for Maan News in which she discusses the state of Palestinian youth in refugee and IDP camps. There are approximately 1.6 million young men and women, who constitute more than one-fifth of the Palestinian society. In the West Bank specifically, there are over 100,000 young Palestinians in refugee camps, distributed between 19 camps. Camps in the West Bank lack educational rehabilitation centers to work on helping young people to build their capacities. The majority of young people work in settlements to support their families at the expense of developing and refining their personalities in line with their psychological and future needs. Many of the educated youth in the camps also suffer from unemployment and lack of job opportunities, which requires them to work in illegal settlements or resort to work in illegal construction workshops that lack the minimum elements of health and sound working conditions. Yet, the economic conditions, the lack of job opportunities and the scarcity of resources in the camps compel them to resort to any available opportunities to help themselves and their families.

COVID-19

The Media Line published a report discussing a new survey that shows COVID-19’s severe impact on displaced and vulnerable youth in Jordan. The study found that the pandemic has resulted in “severe economic and service disruptions with far-reaching and heterogeneous effects on adolescent well-being.” These effects include loss of employment, loss of income, inability to buy essential food items, and experiencing food insecurity, coupled with psychological impacts such as increased stress, among others.
