More than two-thirds of young Arabs in the Middle East see Turkey and China as a “strong or somewhat of a strong ally” for the region, research shows. More than 82 percent of Arab youth aged 18-24 named Turkey “a strong ally or somewhat of an ally” followed by China at 80 percent. The United States did not fare as well and was ranked seventh, with 72 percent of Arab youth saying it was a strong ally or somewhat of an ally, below Germany at 78 percent, France at 74 percent and India at 73 percent. In a separate category of alliances within the Arab world, Qatar emerged on top in the eyes of Arab youth, with 90 percent considering it a strong ally or somewhat of an ally.

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Iraq, Jeanine Plasschaert, stressed the need to involve young people in many other issues central to the future of this country. Blaskhart said, in a statement on the occasion of International Youth Day 2023: “Young people make up 60 percent of the population of Iraq … the need to involve them in a green Iraq, and many other issues central to the future of this country.” She added, “It is quite clear, whether my colleagues in the generation like it or not: very soon young people will lead the way, and their voices must be heard.”

On the occasion of International Youth Day, the British Embassy in Libya affirmed its desire to see Libyan youth as leaders of tomorrow. The British Embassy said on its Twitter page that the United Kingdom is passionate about promoting youth opportunities and seeing Libyan youth as leaders of tomorrow and a catalyst for change today in Libya. For its part, the Presidential Council, in a statement, reaffirmed its commitment to the project of reconciliation and youth empowerment, indicating its unwavering support for creating a Libya where reconciliation and sustainable development go hand in hand.

Jerash Youth Center, in cooperation with the Independent Election Commission, implemented an awareness workshop on election and party laws, with the participation of 34 young people in the center hall. The workshop aims to enhance youth participation in public life and enable young people to exercise their active role in political life.

Young Arabs wishing to emigrate prefer to move to Canada, the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom or France. High levels of youth unemployment to more than 25%, which is the highest and fastest growing rate in the world. The fifteenth annual ASDA’A BCW Arab Youth Opinion Survey, issued by “ASDA’A BCW” – the leading public relations consulting firm in the Middle East and North Africa – revealed that more than half (53%) of Arab youth in the eastern Mediterranean countries and about half In North Africa (48%), said they are trying or seriously considering leaving their countries to look for better opportunities, especially job opportunities.

In a bid to counter the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region’s youth employment gap, INJAZ Al-Arab has joined forces with The Starbucks Foundation and Starbucks Middle East and launched youth upskilling programs across the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait geared at teaching financial independence and employability. Commenting on the partnership, Akef Alaqrabawi, CEO of INJAZ Al-Arab, said, “Youth unemployment remains one of MENA’s most pervasive challenges, and it’s only exacerbated by the pandemic-induced economic outlook. The International Labour Organization reported that youth unemployment in the region was just shy of 26% in 2021 – a new peak. Our partnership with The Starbucks Foundation and Starbucks Middle East aims to reduce the burden of employment on the region by empowering students with the necessary skills, knowledge, and guidance to succeed in tomorrow’s world of work.

Members of the Ma’an Youth Center participated in the dialogue session entitled “Future Professions and Skills that Qualify for the Labor Market”. The dialogue session was jointly held between Al-Hussein Bin Talal University and the Vocational Training Corporation.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports, through the Central Administration for Youth Empowerment (General Administration for Youth Initiatives), in cooperation with the International Labor Organization, is organizing the Youth Employment Forum “Youth for the Future Project” in Alexandria Governorate, on Thursday, August 24, 2023, at the Abu Qir Youth Center, in cooperation with private sector companies. On the sidelines of our youth summer activities. Dr. Ashraf Sobhi, Minister of Youth and Sports, confirmed that the employment forums come within the framework of the Ministry of Youth and Sports’ interest in qualifying Egyptian youth for the labor market, in addition to providing decent job opportunities for young people in all governorates of Egypt, indicating that the coming period will witness a series of forums in cooperation with the Decent Life Foundation in Delta and Upper Egypt governorates to provide employment services to Egyptian youth, especially in the villages of a decent life.

The activities of the “Asaa / Job Search Clubs” project, which is organized by the Ministry of Youth, in partnership with the International Labor Organization and the United Nations Children’s Fund, were concluded at the Irbid Model Youth Center. The project is implemented by the Business Development Center, and funded by the Government of the Netherlands. Yahya Al-Momani, Irbid Youth Director, urged the participants to exert more effort and perseverance, and to make the best use of the knowledge and skills provided by this training course, to keep up with the requirements of the labor market.

A young Yemeni man died, as a result of torture in one of the prisons of the Emirati-backed Transitional Council, in Lahj Governorate, in the south of the country, days after he was kidnapped from his workplace without knowing the reasons. 

Development

The results of a global study, in which more than a million young people participated in the world, revealed that 700 thousand young people, or 70% of those surveyed, chose education, acquiring skills, and obtaining a job, as the best options that provide them with self-reliance and a secure future, according to the Portuguese newspaper “Acoriano Oriental”. The study, which bears the slogan “What do young people want?”, is organized by the “PMNCH” group, which is associated with the World Health Organization, and comes in conjunction with the celebration of International Youth Day, the largest survey of young people in the world. According to the study, the primary concern of young people was obtaining a good education, acquiring distinctive vocational and life skills, and good jobs, which would enable them to face the high cost of living, the climate crisis, and the increasing conflicts.

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya met with youth representatives to discuss the challenges of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. The UN mission said in a statement, that the meeting came to encourage the voices of youth in Libya and to celebrate International Youth Day, which falls on the twelfth of August. Representatives from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime attended the meeting.

The Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics stated that the data for the year 2022 indicate that 18 out of every 100 young men/women aged 18-29 years have a bachelor’s degree or higher, pointing out that young women are the most fortunate, as 23 out of every 100 young women hold a degree Bachelor’s degree and above, compared to 13 young males. On the occasion of the International Youth Day, which falls on the 12 of August, the Statistics Authority indicated that, on the other hand, unemployment rates constitute the biggest challenge facing young people, as these rates reached 59% among females and 32% among males, and were the highest in the Gaza Strip compared to the West Bank, with 75% and 30%, respectively. The percentage of young women aged 20-24 years who got married before reaching the age of 18 was about 13 young women for every 100 young women in 2020 (12% in the West Bank, 17% in Gaza Strip), while this ratio was 37 young women for every 100 young women in the year 2010. The percentage of young people (18-29 years) who practice smoking in 2021 was about 31% (43% in the West Bank, 13% in the Gaza Strip), and at the gender level, the percentage of male youth who practiced smoking was about 54% compared to 7% for females. According to data from the Labor Force Survey for the year 2022, about 95% of young people in the age group of 18-29 years use the Internet from anywhere, and the percentage of male youth who use the Internet from anywhere is 95%, compared to 96% for females.

The Barzan Youth Center celebrated the graduation of more than 1,000 members of the Barzan Academy for Youth Leaders, which was launched by the center with the aim of building entities that focus on the leadership aspect. This came during the closing ceremony of the summer activity at the Barzan Academy for Youth Leaders at the Barzan Youth Center for this year (2023), in the presence of a number of officials from the Ministry of Sports and Youth, alumni of the academy and parents. Dr. Safaa Al-Sharif, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports in Alexandria, said that the training activities for the project “A Thousand Girls.. A Thousand Dreams” were implemented at the Sidi Beshr Club, which is implemented by the Central Administration for Sports Development “General Administration of the Grassroots” in cooperation with the Directorate of Youth and Sports in Alexandria and the British Council for Education. This came during the event organized by the “Dubai Customs Youth” team on the occasion of the International Youth Day, which falls on August 12 of each year, and is celebrated around the world this year under the slogan “The importance of developing youth skills suitable for the green economy in achieving a sustainable world.”

Arab youth’s confidence in government is on the slide, with less than half (46 percent) saying their voice matters to leadership — a substantial decrease from 2022. Within the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, a massive 78 percent said they think their voice matters to the leadership of their country. However, in North Africa and the Levant that number dropped to 35 and 32 percent respectively. Moreover, a majority of youth in the Levant (71 percent) and North Africa (61 percent) say their regions are going in the wrong direction, and over two-thirds believe their governments do not have the right policies to address their most important concerns. The contrast between the regions is apparent even in views on corruption. While 52 percent in the GCC believe there is no corruption in their region, a mere 10 percent in the Levant and 12 percent in North Africa held the same view about their countries. Arab youth is not particularly optimistic about finding a new job either, with 50 percent of the youth in North Africa and 57 percent in the Levant believing it would be difficult to find employment. 

According to Asda’a BCW’s most recent survey, 81% of Bahraini youth believe their government is addressing most of their pressing issues. The survey revealed that the youth in Bahrain cited unemployment, government corruption, high living costs, economic instability, and climate change as their major concerns. Additionally, around 61% of Bahraini youth expressed confidence in their government’s ability to address unemployment, while 20% believed that it is easy for young people to find jobs in their country. Further, 52% of respondents did not find job opportunities to be difficult or scarce while about two-thirds believed that the government could effectively address the rising cost of living. Over two-thirds of the respondents (77%) expressed confidence in the government’s ability to achieve economic stability, and more than three-quarters (77%) were confident that the government would take appropriate actions to address climate change.

Yemeni researcher and Secretary-General of the Saba Youth Council, Khalid Baqlan, asserted that the government is responsible for the service collapse in the south, aiming to undermine the Southern Transitional Council (STC). In a tweet, Baqlan stated that the return of Brigadier Eidros is essential, and his resumption of duties as Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Council will put an end to the deliberate service collapse exploited by obstructive forces in a desperate attempt to turn people against their political representation. He confidently stated that the government’s crisis management has come to an end, closing a chapter for a failed prime minister and some of his ministers.

Economics and Entrepreneurship

The Arab world has a promising opportunity to promote youth entrepreneurship, with nearly half of young Arabs saying they plan to start their own business in the next five years. Youth unemployment in the region is one of the highest in the world at over 26% with nearly one in three youth (32%) aged 15 to 24 not engaged in employment, education or training, according to a World Bank report. When it comes to their preferred industry, 15% of the sample said they wanted to start a business in the tech sector, followed by e-commerce (13%), the creative industries (11%), manufacturing (11%), real estate (10%), the food business (9%), and retail, hospitality and education (7% each). One of the significant trends that the survey has documented over the years is the increasing preference of Arab youth for private sector jobs over a career in government. One in four (25%) young Arabs now say they want to work for themselves or their family, a slight decline since last year (28%), but a six-percentage point jump from 2019. Meanwhile, 11% said they preferred to work for a non-profit organization.

Asda’a BCW’s Survey revealed that Arab youth is not particularly optimistic about finding a new job either, with 50 percent of the youth in North Africa and 57 percent in the Levant believing it would be difficult to find employment. More than half of the participants said they were not confident in their government’s ability to deal with issues like unemployment, corruption, the rising cost of living, income equality, and economic stability.

Education For Employment, in partnership with the Ras Al Khaimah Human Resources Department, has completed a seventh successful work readiness training program for young Emirati talent, as part of Citi Foundation’s Pathways to Progress program. The newly graduated cadre of 31 young female Emiratis underwent two weeks of rigorous training designed to equip them with a robust set of essential professional skills needed to enter the competitive UAE job market. The program has been meticulously developed to guide youth through the early stages of career pathway development by focusing on delivering a set of professional and technical skills that are in high demand by employers.

The Business Development Center (BDC) conducted community sessions in Karak, Jordan, to discuss local economic opportunities that can be utilized for youth self-employment and entrepreneurship projects, aligning with the competitive advantage of the region. The primary aim of these sessions is to encourage youth of the governorate to establish small projects that address societal needs, thereby reducing high unemployment rates and creating job opportunities for youth. Attendees explored available opportunities and learned how to transform them into productive projects for the future.

Sheraa Entrepreneurship Center has launched the 2023 edition of the Startup Dojo, a youth incubation program that has been designed keeping young entrepreneurs in mind. The eight-week intensive training and mentorship program takes place every summer to enable young talent to develop their entrepreneurial solutions and gain real-world experience of starting and running their own businesses. This year, Startup Dojo has seen strong participation from Emirati youth who make up 81% of attendees at this prestigious program. Startup Dojo 2023 will benefit a 50-student cohort from various UAE universities who represent 16 diverse teams, each with a unique idea that has immense entrepreneurial potential.

With an expected budget of more than “$1.64bn” by 2026, Qatar “has the fastest growth” in cybersecurity spending in the Middle East, the Investment Promotion Agency Qatar has said in a report. The report also highlighted that hyper-connected Internet ecosystems and national expenditure on cyberinfrastructure will boost cybersecurity market growth in Qatar and the region. Four “promising trends,” such as ‘cross-sectoral digital transformation’, ‘a promising age of digital government services’, ‘cloud-first economy’, and ‘emerging technologies and growing youth’, are expected to shape Qatar’s cybersecurity market and drive the growth in 2030 and beyond, the report pointed out.

The Ministry of Youth and the Green Circle Software Company signed a joint cooperation agreement in the field of qualifying and training youth in the field of cybersecurity. According to the ministry’s statement, the agreement was signed by the Secretary-General, Dr. Hussein Al-Jabour, on behalf of the ministry, and on behalf of the company, the general manager, Engineer Muhammad Al-Khudari.

Israeli occupation forces, on Friday, killed a 17-year-old Palestinian during a demonstration against illegal Jewish settlements in the Occupied West Bank. The institutions concerned with the affairs of prisoners reported that the occupation forces arrested a number of Palestinians, who were transferred for interrogation by the security services of the occupation, under the pretext of participating in popular resistance. In a brief statement, the Israeli occupation army spokesman announced the arrest of 5 Palestinians from the West Bank, who were transferred for interrogation by the security services. The occupation forces also stormed the town of Barqa, and clashes took place with the residents, amid heavy firing of tear gas canisters at the houses. Clashes erupted between dozens of young men and the occupation forces in Jalazoun camp, Ramallah district.

Palestine called for an international investigation into the “execution” of a young man, Friday night – Saturday, by Israeli army bullets, near the city of Nablus in the northern West Bank. This came in a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, hours after the young man was killed, another was injured, and another was arrested. The Foreign Ministry condemned “in the strongest terms the heinous crime of execution committed by the occupation forces in the town of Sebastia, which led to the death of the 18-year-old Fawzi Mokhalafa, and the injury and arrest of his colleague, Muhammad Mukhaimer,” on Friday evening.

The Israeli occupation forces arrested three young men from the Al-Abayyat area, east of Bethlehem.According to security sources, the occupation forces arrested Yazan Shadi Obayat (18 years), Ibrahim Awad Obayat (19 years), and Muhammad Mahmoud Obayat, after raiding and searching the homes of their families.

A report highlights that the Houthi militias committed 78 violations in Taiz Governorate over the span of June 2023. The documented cases included a civilian killed by a Houthi sniper, a child killed directly by the militia, injuries to seven others, including children and women, caused by the Houthi militia. Additionally, one woman was injured by a Houthi-laid landmine, and one civilian was brutally assaulted by the Houthi militia. The report also highlighted mass displacement caused by the Houthi militia’s heavy weapons and mortar shelling of villages in Ma’wiyah district, leading to significant damage and destruction of civilian properties and vehicles. The Houthi militia was also held accountable for planting mines and invading civilian homes, leading to more destruction and casualties.

The National Democratic Institute (NDI) launched a training workshop titled “Combating Hate Speech and Misinformation and Ensuring Personal Security,” held in Abyan Governorate in Yemen. The workshop is part of a program aimed at promoting the role of women and civil society in the political process and peacebuilding in Yemen. The four-day workshop convened 60 women, including activists, leaders, marginalized individuals, and PWDs. It looked to empower women in enhancing their personal security and developing safety plans for their personal, professional, and political lives. The program seeks to increase the involvement of Yemeni women in political leadership, peace processes, and political transitions at both the local and national levels. This workshop marks the first training activity by NDI in Abyan, with future activities and training sessions to be conducted in partnership with the Abyan Youth Foundation.

On the occasion of the World Youth Skills Day, King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief) organized empowering activities for Syrian refugees at Jordan’s Zaatari Camp. The Saudi Community Service Center hosted skill-building activities to empower young refugees and distributed sewing machines and kits to women who had received sewing training through the center. The project is part of Saudi Arabia’s humanitarian aid and relief efforts through KSrelief, supporting various countries worldwide. The UN’s theme for this year’s World Youth Skills Day emphasizes the crucial role of teachers, trainers, and educators in providing skills to youth.

Environment

The Algerian Ministry of the Interior announced the death of 15 people and the injury of 26 others, as a result of fires that occurred in a number of states in the country, pointing to the evacuation of 1,500 citizens. According to the statement, 12 aircraft are still deployed in these six states, including Air Force firefighting helicopters and a “large-capacity firefighting aircraft.”

Young Iraqi activists in Wasit governorate are preparing to compete in local elections, not because of their conviction, but rather against political leaders and dominant parties, as per a report by Alamada. Young activists in Wasit believe that leaving the scene for incumbent political forces, for the governorate council elections scheduled for 6 November 2023, will complicate the local political landscape and increase people’s discontent with those councils, stressing the need to exclude old faces and remove them from the field. Many believe that elections will not take place as scheduled. This is because many activists reject the presence of provincial councils altogether, particularly with the new law that gives little opportunity to smaller, emerging, and independent parties, as governing forces are likely to succumb to the pressure and postpone the elections for another year. 

A number of reports emanating from French media discussed Turkey’s youth and their role in the Turkish elections, indicating that they are a generation that has known no one but Erdogan in this position of power. French newspaper, Lacroix, states that there is a desire on the part of young people in Turkey to change and vote for a new face, as this generation looks forward to a new personality that meets their aspirations. “Turks born at the beginning of the 21st century only knew Recep Tayyip Erdogan in power and this generation may vote for a new face in the upcoming elections,” the report’s author said.

A YouGov survey of Palestinians shows that younger people are far less likely to support a two-state solution: the creation of an independent Palestinian state alongside the state of Israel. The survey showed that Palestinians between the ages of 18 to 24 make up 42% of those who support the idea, while more than 63% of those above the age of 45 are willing to support the initiative. The survey shows that Palestinian youth found the official return of Jerusalem a non-negotiable with only 1% allowing Israelis to have it fully and with the creation of a Palestinian capital elsewhere. Other proposed solutions such as dividing the city, with East Jerusalem as the capital of the Palestinian state and West Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, was favored at only 15%.

In Libya, the Zawya Youth Movement Coordinator confirmed that one young Libyan died during armed clashes in the city between armed groups, as there was also some physical damage to citizens’ homes and a medical clinic. The coordinator said that the security situation in the city was relatively stable following the intervention of the joint force recently formed by the Chief of Staff of the Interim Government. It is worth noting that the movement’s escalations are driven by the failure of the government of Al-Dbeiba to meet their demands.

The First Lady of Mauritania said the addition of a national parliamentary regulation on youth was an “unprecedented step.” She highlighted that young people’s entry into Parliament, through this new regulation, is an important step towards investing in empowering young people and addressing their issues.

Economics and Entrepreneurship

The most recent Arab Youth Survey suggests a growing gap among optimists and pessimists, especially when it comes to the economy. To address youth’s concerns, policymakers must shield households in the MENA region from rising prices and provide more support for entrepreneurship. Given this context, it is no surprise that rising living costs and unemployment were the most pressing concerns for young Arabs in the 2022 ASDA’A BCW Arab Youth Survey. The results show that 41% of respondents reported struggling to pay their expenses in full, up from 37% in 2021. This is much higher in the Levant, where 63% of the young people surveyed were unable to meet their basic financial obligations. Further, and while only 15% of the youth population in GCC countries said it would be difficult to find a job, that share was 55% in North Africa and 73% in the Levant. The most encouraging finding was growing interest in entrepreneurship, as more young Arabs expressed the desire to start a business and work for themselves, while the traditional allure of government jobs appears to be waning. 

The Egyptian National Telecommunications Institute announced the opening of registration for a four-month training and grant per the “Youth of Digital Egypt” initiative. The training targets young graduates, focusing on cloud computing architecture along with learning how to design, create, and manage integrated solutions to increase efficiency and speed of service performance. The program includes practical training using the latest training systems and covers skills desired in the labor market, including communication skills, project management, and vocational English.

The Moroccan Minister of Administrative Reform and Digital Transition noted the tremendous potential and qualifications of Moroccan youth in the field of digitization. She highlighted the Ministry’s partnership agreements with a number of global companies, which “will enable the creation of 15,800 direct employment opportunities.” The Minister is betting on bringing in investments in digitization, as Morocco hosts, in late May, the world’s largest technology exhibit, GITEX, which has more than 900 exhibitors and start-ups, as well as delegations from 95 countries.

Conflict

Three young Palestinian were shot by Israeli occupation forces and dozens suffered from suffocation during the occupation army’s assault on an anti-settlement march in various West Bank governorates. The spokesman for the Qalqilya region explained that the occupying forces had broken into the town, taken to the roofs of buildings, and fired live bullets at the protesters, injuring a 21-year-old with a live caliber and two others with metal bullets, along with dozens of suffocation cases, including women and children.

A young Palestinian was wounded and two others were arrested, as the Israeli occupation forces stormed the Old City of Nablus, one day after they stormed the Balata camp east of the city and killed two young men. The Israeli occupation forces killed two Palestinians and wounded 7 others during their raid on the Balata camp east of Nablus. Palestinian sources reported that two youths were killed by live gunfire in the head during the raid. This brings the total number of Palestinian killed by the Israeli forces in the West Bank and East Jerusalem to 117 since the beginning of this year.

Palestinians in Lebanon organized three gatherings in solidarity with the besieged Gaza Strip, which has been under Israeli attack for a few days. Palestinian factions, youth groups and other organizations called for the organization of the gatherings in Beirut, refugee camps, and the city of Tyre. Speakers at the refugee camps reiterated their support for the Palestinian resistance in the Gaza Strip and condemned the Israeli policy of assassination against Palestinian resistance leaders.

A young Jordanian man is creating artworks using the garbage he collects from the streets. The young man explained that he collects discarded objects such as air conditioners and televisions and uses them to make artworks that he shows outdoors. His artwork varied between cars, bicycles, and robots. The young man had started his project as a road garbage collection initiative, but had soon been inspired by the idea of using such neglected objects to manufacture artworks. The young man’s creations include some artwork he set up on a land in his hometown of Zarqa city for people to enjoy for free.

The Directorate of Youth and Sports in Sohag, Egypt, conducted a handicrafts training workshop for young girls, as part of the Jarja Youth Center’s monthly activities. The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports said that the aim of the course was to equip young girls with necessary skills for the labor market.

Education

The UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East said that he was “deeply disturbed” by Israel’s demolition of an EU-funded Palestinian primary school for the children in Jubbet adh Dhib village. The demolition was carried out following an Israeli court ruling citing safety concerns in response to a petition filed by a settlement organization. It has an immediate impact on the education of at least 40 Palestinian children. The UN Coordinator stated that 58 schools serving 6,500 children are currently under threat of demolition due to a shortage of building permits, which are nearly impossible for Palestinians to get. 

The Syrian Youth Footprint Foundation, in cooperation with the Iqra Center for Excellence, is implementing free courses for high school students in Rif-Damashq governorate. The courses, supervised by a specialized teaching staff, provide intensive learning in subjects such as Arabic, English, French, mathematics, physics, and chemistry for 150 to 200 students, who can enroll in up to 3 subjects.

Environment

The Youth Forum of the Abu Mnisi Youth Center in Kafr al-Sheikh, Egypt, presented several recommendations, as part of the Economic, Social, and Political Forum. Attended by 25 youth members of the center, the sessions explored youth’s vision for the future of smart green projects in Egypt, such as solar and wind plants and their importance reducing pollution. The sessions also discussed youth’s proposed solutions to aspects negatively impacting the development of education and health services, among others.

The Directorate of Youth and Sports in Kafr al-Sheikh, Egypt, organized a community service project to address climate change through planting trees. 18 youth members of the Shabas Martyrs Youth Center operate this initiative, as the governorate allocated a piece of irrigation land the youth center to establish a park for the center’s members.

Politics and Political Engagement

* One March 27, Media Line held a Panel Discussion titled “10 Years Since the Arab Spring – So What?” The discussion first recapped the events of the Arab Spring, the revolutions, the demonstrations, the resignations, and the ongoing conflicts. Then it delved into the question of do young people in the MENA region have any more hope?

* Al-Arabiya reported on March 28 that the Tunisian President Said’s public invitation for a national youth dialogue has received polar responses. Some young Tunisians have welcomed the initiative while others denounced it, who were led by the Tunisian General Labor Union. The Union accused the president of bypassing them and hijacking their initiative to organize a national dialogue that aims at saving Tunisia from its political, economic, and social crisis. The situations stands that the Union prioritizes addressing the crisis the country is going through before moving forward to governance-related solutions, while the President is stressing that he will not engage in the Union’s initiative before the Prime Minister resigns. 

* The Assistant General Secretary to the Tunisian General Labor Union asserted on March 31 that the national dialogue, which will be conducted according to the conditions of the Union, will only include organized youth – not youth of national committees. 

* Mohammad Joweili wrote on March 30 an article titled “Youth and Questions of the Phase.” In it, he raised a number of important questions facing youth in Tunisia, including “should youth be included in the national dialogue that is supposed to be held soon to address Tunisia’s crisis? Why is stressing on the inclusion of youth a major factor to launch the dialogue? Does shifting the conversation toward youth mean that decision-makers have fulfilled their duties and the time has come for them to leave, literally? Joweili raises an argument that any conversation taken on by politicians that is concerned with youth will not be different than other conversations before because its agenda will not be rooted in the core challenges as much as it would stem from the needs of politicians in the time being to get out of the crisis. The current politicians’ crisis is not a youth one, instead, the dialogue needs to ask the right questions, but before that, politicians need to understand youth’s receptiveness to the dialogue first and to the questions that will be asked, secondly. 

* Dr. Nasser Zidan wrote on March 29 an article titled “what do Lebanese youth think about amid the worst crisis in Lebanon’s history?” Dr. Zidan explored that the terrible financial crisis has been especially difficult on Lebanese youth who are, increasingly, thinking about emigration, especially university degree holders. He added that the crisis has left lasting psychological implications on Lebanese youth. Lebanese youth have become apathetic toward the deeply-rooted administrative and political corruption in Lebanon, and this apathy has taken the shape of believing that the prospects for change are nonexistent.  

* Wattan reported on March 29 the outcomes of discussion session organized Palestinian Working Women Society for Development under the Youth Engagement in the Political Field Project. The session discussed the role of youth in Palestine and the importance of their inclusion in the political process, especially in political parties. The session featured a number of important topics, among which, the need to reduce the age of candidacy, increasing the women-specific quota to 30%, and upscaling the efforts to engage youth in electoral lists, which have been subpar despite the fact that 50% of all registered voters, as of now, are young people aged 18-30. The session asserted that youth’s proactive participation in the lead-up to the elections has yet to be mirrored by welcoming initiatives from political parties and their electoral lists. 

* Bassim Za’arir, a leader in Hamas, assured that Hamas’ electoral list for legislative elections has been fair to women and youth. He added that their list has surpassed other lists in this avenue and more, as youth and women constitute a large percentage of members of the list in their effort to prepare young and diverse leaders. He concluded that their inclusion proves that the list places the priorities of Palestinians at the top. 

* AP News reported on April 2 that tens of thousands of demonstrators marched in Algeria’s capital in support of the Hirak pro-democracy movement. The demonstrators repeated slogans such as “no to the military state” and “we will not stop until the Hirak wins”. These demonstrations show that Hirak is still adamant on achieving its objectives, as it continues to point out that president Tebboune is yet to fulfill the demands for change that dismissed his predecessor Bouteflika. 

* On March 30 and during a “National Youth Dialogue Initiative” meeting, The Jordanian President of the Senate stressed the importance of upscaling the mechanisms for dialogue with youth to modernize the outdated means of communication, which do not accommodate youth’s interests and priorities in order to effectively listen to their suggestions, opinions, and thoughts on various national issues. 

* Khaled Badwi, an Egyptian parliamentarian, stated that Egypt and the Ministry of Youth and Sports has a golden opportunity if it manages to place a new vision for youth work policies in Egypt. He added that if the state comprehensively invested in youth across all sectors (political cultural, social, arts, sports, and international relations), then Egypt would raise an informed generation that can contribute to the success of the Egyptian state. He concluded that the starting point should be lowering the candidacy age for national and for municipal elections which are currently 35 and 25, respectively. 

* Middle East Eye reported on March 30 that the Libyan Government of National Unity (GNU) faced a major crisis. The Administrative Control Authority (ACA) demanded the submission of the resumes of new ministers after it was found that some Libyan ministers have falsified their qualifications. The Minister of Labor and Rehabilitation condemned the “ferocious attack aimed at impeding the effective leadership of the youth through spreading lies and fake news”.

* عقدت ميديا لاين في 27 آذار/ مارس حلقة نقاشية بعنوان "10 سنوات منذ الربيع العربي - وماذا الآن؟" لخصت المناقشة أولاً أحداث الربيع العربي والثورات والمظاهرات والاستقالات والصراعات المستمرة. ثم تطرقت إلى السؤال: هل بقي لدى الشباب في منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا أي أمل الآن؟

* أفادت قناة العربية يوم 28 آذار / مارس أن دعوة الرئيس التونسي سعيد للحوار الوطني للشباب تلقت ردود فعل مختلفة، حيث رحب بعض الشباب التونسي بالمبادرة فيما استنكرها آخرون، وتحديدا الاتحاد العام التونسي للشغل. واتهم الاتحاد الرئيس بتجاوزه والانقلاب مبادرتهم لتنظيم حوار وطني يهدف إلى إنقاذ تونس من أزمتها السياسية والاقتصادية والاجتماعية. المواقف هي أن الاتحاد يعطي الأولوية لمعالجة الأزمة التي تمر بها البلاد قبل المضي قدما في الحلول المتعلقة بالحوكمة، بينما يؤكد الرئيس أنه لن يشارك في مبادرة الاتحاد قبل استقالة رئيس الوزراء.

* أكد الأمين العام المساعد للاتحاد العام التونسي للشغل في 31 آذار / مارس أن الحوار الوطني الذي سيجري وفق شروط الاتحاد سيشمل فقط الشباب المنظم وليس شباب التنسيقيات أو اللجان الشعبية.

* كتب محمد جويلي في 30 آذار / مارس مقالاً بعنوان "الشباب وأسئلة المرحلة". وطرح فيه عددًا من الأسئلة المهمة التي تواجه الشباب في تونس، ومنها "هل ينبغي إشراك الشباب في الحوار الوطني الذي يُفترض عقده قريبًا لمعالجة الأزمة التونسية؟ لماذا يعتبر التأكيد على إشراك الشباب عاملاً رئيسياً لإطلاق الحوار؟ هل تحويل الحديث نحو الشباب يعني أن صناع القرار قد أنجزوا واجباتهم وحان وقت الرحيل، حرفياً؟ ويقول جويلي أن أي محادثة تعنى بالشباب يجريها السياسيون لن تختلف عن المحادثات الأخرى من قبل لأن أجندتها لن تكون متجذرة في التحديات الأساسية بقدر ما ستكون متأصلة في احتياجات السياسيين في الوقت الراهن للخروج من الأزمة. فأزمة السياسيين الحالية ليست أزمة شبابية، بل يحتاج الحوار الوطني إلى طرح الأسئلة الصحيحة، ولكن قبل ذلك يحتاج السياسيون إلى فهم مدى تقبل الشباب للحوار أولاً وللأسئلة التي ستطرح ثانياً.

* كتب الدكتور ناصر زيدان في 29 آذار / مارس مقالاً بعنوان "بماذا يفكر الشباب إبان أسوأ أزمة بتاريخ لبنان؟" اكتشف الدكتور زيدان أن الأزمة المالية كانت صعبة بشكل خاص على الشباب اللبناني أدت إلى جعل المزيد من الشباب بالتفكير بشكل متزايد في الهجرة، وخاصة حاملي الشهادات الجامعية. وأضاف أن الأزمة خلفت تداعيات نفسية طويلة المدى على الشباب اللبناني، فأصبح الشباب اللبناني غير مبالٍ بالفساد الإداري والسياسي المتجذر في لبنان، وقد اتخذ هذا اللامبالاة شكل الاعتقاد بأن آفاق التغيير غير موجودة أبدا.

* نشرت صحيفة وطن في 29 آذار / مارس نتائج جلسة للنقاش نظمتها جمعية المرأة العاملة الفلسطينية للتنمية في إطار مشروع إشراك الشباب في المجال السياسي. وناقشت الجلسة دور الشباب في فلسطين وأهمية إشراكهم في العملية السياسية وخاصة في الأحزاب السياسية. وتضمنت الجلسة عددًا من الموضوعات المهمة، من بينها ضرورة تقليص سن الترشح، وزيادة الكوتا الخاصة بالمرأة إلى 30٪ في المجلس، والارتقاء بجهود إشراك الشباب في القوائم الانتخابية، والتي كانت دون المستوى. فعلى الرغم من أن 50٪ من جميع الناخبين المسجلين حتى الآن هم من الشباب الذين تتراوح أعمارهم بين 18 و 30 عامًا، إلا أن اشراكهم في القوائم يعد ضعيفا. وأكدت الجلسة أن المشاركة القوية للشباب في الفترة التي تسبق الانتخابات لم تتجاوب بالترحيب من قبل الأحزاب السياسية وقوائمها الانتخابية من خلال ادماجهم بشكل أفضل. 

* أكد باسم زعارير القيادي في حماس أن قائمة حماس الانتخابية في الانتخابات التشريعية كانت منصفة للنساء والشباب. وأضاف أن قائمتهم تجاوزت القوائم الأخرى في هذا المسار وأكثر، حيث يشكل الشباب والنساء نسبة كبيرة من أعضاء القائمة في سعيهم لإعداد قيادات شابة ومتنوعة. وخلص إلى أن إدراجهم يثبت أن القائمة تضع أولويات الفلسطينيين في المقدمة.

* أفادت وكالة أسوشيتد برس في 2 أبريل أن عشرات الآلاف من المتظاهرين خرجوا في مسيرة في العاصمة الجزائرية دعما للحراك المؤيد للديمقراطية. وردد المتظاهرون شعارات مثل "لا للدولة العسكرية" و "لن نتوقف حتى يفوز الحراك". وتدل هذه التظاهرات على أن الحراك ما زال مصرا على تحقيق أهدافه، إذ يستمر في الإشارة إلى أن الرئيس تبون لم يلبي مطالب التغيير التي أطاحت بسلفه بوتفليقة.

* شدد رئيس مجلس الأعيان الأردني فيصل الفايز في 30 آذار / مارس وخلال اجتماع "مبادرة الحوار الوطني للشباب" على أهمية الارتقاء بآليات الحوار مع الشباب لتحديث وسائل الاتصال التي عفا عليها الزمن والتي لا تستجيب لمصالح الشباب وأولوياتهم، وذلك للاستماع الفعال لاقتراحاتهم وآرائهم وأفكارهم حول مختلف القضايا الوطنية.

* صرح خالد بدوي، عضو البرلمان المصري، أن مصر ووزارة الشباب والرياضة لديهما فرصة ذهبية إذا تمكنت من وضع رؤية جديدة لسياسات عمل الشباب في مصر. وأضاف أنه إذا استثمرت الدولة بشكل شامل في الشباب في جميع القطاعات (السياسية والثقافية والاجتماعية والفنية والرياضية والعلاقات الدولية)، فإن مصر ستنشئ جيلًا واعيًا يمكنه المساهمة في نجاح الدولة المصرية. وخلص إلى أن نقطة البداية يجب أن تكون خفض سن الترشح للانتخابات الوطنية والبلدية، وهما 35 و 25 على التوالي حاليا. 

* أفاد موقع ميدل إيست آي في 30 آذار / مارس أن حكومة الوحدة الوطنية الليبية واجهت أزمة كبيرة في الأيام الماضية، حيث طالبت هيئة الرقابة الإدارية بتقديم السيرة الذاتية للوزراء الجدد بعد أن تبين أن بعض الوزراء الليبيين زوروامؤهلاتهم. واستنكر وزير العمل والتأهيل "الاعتداء الشرس الذي استهدف عرقلة القيادة الفعالة للشباب من خلال نشر الأكاذيب والأخبار الكاذبة".

Economics and Entrepreneurship

* AFP reported on March 30 that while a decade has passed since the Arab Spring, many youth in the MENA region are still at risk and are still in dire need. The World Bank indicates that in order to address the challenge of unemployment in the region, governments need to create 300 million jobs by 2050 (800,000 jobs per month) only to accommodate the pace of new entrants into the labor market. 

* The Egyptian Ministry of Youth and Sports, in collaboration with the ILO, implemented a camp for job search for 10 days in its efforts in reaching youth who are looking for employment opportunities and addressing the obstacles they face. The camp essentially trains youth on how to search for relevant jobs, and it trains them on how to write their CVs, pass interviews, and communicate with companies regarding vacancies. 

* The Egyptian Ministry of Youth and Sports has launched the “Digital banking Summit” on Saturday April 3 as the first summit of its kind in the region. The summit aims to raise youth’s awareness of the financial sector as well as the concept of financial inclusion. It will also enable youth to present their ideas to advance the sector in Egypt. 

* On March 29, the president of the Algeria Economic Club Said Mansour provided a number of recommendations to the Algerian Government to address the ongoing economic crisis in Algeria. The recommendations centered around banks, the industrial sector, the new investment law, foreign investment, and financial policies that facilitate youth’s access to loans. Mansour urged the government to enable youth to access the Zakat Fund in order to support them in starting and implementing their entrepreneurial projects. 

* The chief of the Algerian organization for consumer protection in Bordj Bou Arreridj warned of the numerous advertisements of schools and centers that aim to scam Algerian youth by providing short-term trainings for critical positions and offering unaccredited certificates. He warned youth of the dangers of undergoing such trainings, as they would not qualify the recipient for the position they seek to apply for along with legal complications that could arise from their engagement in these programs. 

* On April 1, the Training and Vocational Training Directorate in Skikda, Algeria signed 5 agreements amid the launching of the vocational entry program – March 2021 round. The 5 agreements have been signed with the National Association for Renewable Energy, the Agricultural Affairs Directorate, Fishing and Fishing Resources Directorate, the Directorate of the Environment, and the Studies and Technical Works Completion Company for the East. These agreements aim to enact multiple specialized vocational training programs for youth of Skikda. 

* The Algerian Delegate Minister in charge of Micro Enterprises announced on March 31 that personal contributions have been officially lowered from 15% to 5% to support youth who seek to establish micro enterprises under the umbrella of the National Agency for Support and Development of Entrepreneurship. 

* Vivo Energy, a Moroccan energy company, announced its new cohort of youth volunteers under its Contracting Program that targets youth and supports them in engaging in the labor market in collaboration with Injaz Morocco organization. The partnership between Vivo Energy and Injaz started in 2009 and resulted in training more than 10,000 students on entrepreneurship, who went on to establish 120 companies and 28 start-up contracting companies. 

* The World Bank published a new report on March 30 titled “Morocco’s Jobs Landscape”, which offers an analysis of Morocco’s employment challenges, especially the slowing pace of job creation that is not keeping up with population growth and new labor market entrants, such as youth and women. The report provides a number of key insights, including “improving the transition of young people into the labor market” which highlights the challenges associated with youth not in education, employment, or training (NEETs) and unemployment among university degree holders and that hinders youth’s motivation, sense of personal fulfillment, and their present and future contribution to the economy. * The Collaborative Board of Berrechid, Morocco, launched on March 29 the Youth and Entrepreneurship Platform under the third phase of the National Initiative for Human Development. The platform aims at training youth on entrepreneurship to contribute to the development of Berrechid and Morocco in general. The platform also contributes to the ongoing national initiative for economic and entrepreneurship engagement, and it connects youth with experts and specialists. 

* On April 1, the Moroccan Prime Minister gave the Minister of Interior the authority to sign decisions extending the retirement age for employees of the territorial authorities enrolled in the civil pension system. The decision sparked discussions among employees and trade unionists as well as those degree holders. They believe that this decision would contribute to raising the unemployment of qualified people and degree holders, especially if there is a large number of employees benefiting from this decision. 

* King Abdullah II of Jordan praised the pioneering spirit of Jordanian youth, stressing the importance of small and home-based enterprises and self-employment programs in combating unemployment. Accompanied by Queen Rania, he viewed the products of a number of young men and women in various governorates, after they received the necessary training, through the “Productive Youth” initiative launched by the Royal Hashemite Court in 2019. King Abdullah also stressed that the experiences of these youth should be highlighted more to encourage other youth to proactively turn to entrepreneurship. 

* Ahmad Hanandeh, the Jordanian Minister for Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship, stated on March 31 that the Ministry has begun studying and placing the foundations to launch for the Project for Youth Employment in Digital Entrepreneurial and IT Enterprises with a budget of $28 million. The project will target graduates who finished their university studies in the past 3 years and the government will contribute 50% of their salaries for 6 months in these companies. The project is expected to commence in next May. 

* On March 30, the Kuwaiti Minister of State for Youth Affairs met with WTE Group to discuss youth employment opportunities under the “Work Makers” Project within the state’s Development Plan. The Minister announced that they will open vacancies in Um Al-Himan city to employ youth in its sewer station. 

* The University of Emirates, in partnership with Maan Association, revealed on March 30 that youth aged 18-34 make up approximately 47% of the total number of active social entrepreneurs in the UAE. The Association has recently also launched an incubator for social entrepreneurship to upscale start-ups 

* Injaz Al-Arab Association launched “Jahez” Virtual Forum between March 30 and 31 to enhance Arab youth’s employment skills and support them in creating entrepreneurial opportunities. The forum was attended, among others, by LinkedIn, Microsoft, MBC, Nestle, Schneider Electric, and Coca-Cola. 

* Etihad Aviation Group will be launching the Etihad Challenge under startAD’s Youth Entrepreneurship Program to find innovative solutions to address sustainability challenges concerning waste management. The program has thus far advanced 300 youth entrepreneurs in the UAE, many of whom incorporated their businesses and engaged in important projects. 

* On April 2, the Mauritanian Ministry of Employment, Youth, and Sports announced that it is working on a promising strategy to address unemployment by focusing on preparing youth to the job market.

الاقتصاد وريادة الأعمال

* أفادت وكالة فرانس برس في 30 آذار / مارس أنه على الرغم من مرور عقد على الربيع العربي، إلا أنه لا يزال العديد من الشباب في منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا في خطر وما زالوا في حاجة ماسة إلى المساندة. ويشير البنك الدولي إلى أنه من أجل مواجهة تحدي البطالة في المنطقة، تحتاج الحكومات إلى خلق 300 مليون وظيفة بحلول عام 2050 (بمعدل 800000 وظيفة في الشهر) وذلك فقط لاستيعاب وتيرة الوافدين الجدد إلى سوق العمل.

* نفذت وزارة الشباب والرياضة المصرية، بالتعاون مع منظمة العمل الدولية، نادياً للبحث عن عمل لمدة 10 أيام في إطار جهودها للوصول إلى الشباب الذين يبحثون عن فرص عمل ومعالجة العقبات التي يواجهونها. يقوم النادي بشكل أساسي بتدريب الشباب على كيفية البحث عن الوظائف ذات الصلة، كما يقوم بتدريبهم على كيفية كتابة سيرهم الذاتية واجتياز المقابلات والتواصل مع الشركات فيما يتعلق بالوظائف الشاغرة.

* أطلقت وزارة الشباب والرياضة المصرية "قمة الخدمات المصرفية الرقمية" يوم السبت 3 نيسان / أبريل كأول قمة من نوعها في المنطقة. وتهدف القمة إلى زيادة وعي الشباب بالقطاع المالي بالإضافة إلى مفهوم الشمول المالي. كما سيمكن الشباب من تقديم أفكارهم للنهوض بالقطاع في مصر.

* قدم رئيس النادي الاقتصادي الجزائري سعيد منصور، في 29 آذار / مارس، عددًا من التوصيات للحكومة الجزائرية لمعالجة الأزمة الاقتصادية في الجزائر. وتركزت التوصيات حول البنوك والقطاع الصناعي وقانون الاستثمار الجديد والاستثمار الخارجي والسياسات المالية التي تسهل حصول الشباب على القروض. وحث منصور الحكومة على تمكين الشباب من الوصول إلى صندوق الزكاة لدعمهم في بدء وتنفيذ مشاريعهم الريادية.

* حذر رئيس المنظمة الجزائرية لحماية المستهلك في برج بوعريريج من الإعلانات العديدة للمدارس والمراكز التي تهدف إلى الاحتيال على الشباب الجزائري من خلال توفير تدريبات قصيرة الأمد للمناصب المهمة وتقديم شهادات غير معتمدة. وحذر الشباب من مخاطر الخضوع لمثل هذه التدريبات، حيث أنهم لن يؤهلوا المتلقي للوظيفة التي يسعون للتقدم لها إلى جانب التعقيدات القانونية التي قد تنجم عن انخراطهم في هذه البرامج.

* وقعت مديرية التكوين والتكوين المهني بسكيكدة بالجزائر، في الأول من أبريل، 5 اتفاقيات على هامش افتتاح الدخول التكويني مارس 2021. وقد تم توقيع الاتفاقيات الخمس مع مع كل من الجمعية الوطنية للطاقات المتجددة، ومديرية المصالح الفلاحية، ومديرية الصيد البحري والموارد الصيدية، ومديرية البيئة، وشركة الدراسات وإنجاز الأشغال الفنية للشرق. تهدف هذه الاتفاقيات إلى تفعيل العديد من برامج التدريب المهني المتخصصة لشباب سكيكدة.

* أعلن الوزير المنتدب الجزائري المكلف بالمؤسسات المصغرة في 31 آذار / مارس أنه تم تخفيض المساهمات الشخصية رسميا من 15٪ إلى 5٪ لدعم الشباب الذين يسعون لتأسيس مؤسسات مصغرة تحت مظلة الوكالة الوطنية لدعم وتنمية ريادة الأعمال.

* أعلنت شركة فيفو انيرجي المغربية للطاقة عن مجموعتها الجديدة من المتطوعين الشباب في إطار برنامجها التعاقدي الذي يستهدف الشباب ويدعمهم في الانخراط في سوق العمل بالتعاون مع منظمة إنجاز المغرب. بدأت الشراكة بين فيفو انيرجي وإنجاز في عام 2009 وأسفرت عن تدريب أكثر من 10 آلاف طالب على ريادة الأعمال، والذين قاموا بتأسيس 120 شركة، من بينها 28 شركة مقاولات ناشئة.

* نشر البنك الدولي تقريراً جديداً في 30 آذار / مارس بعنوان "مشهد الوظائف في المغرب"، والذي يقدم تحليلاً لتحديات التوظيف في المغرب، لا سيما وتيرة التباطؤ في خلق فرص العمل التي لا تتماشى مع النمو السكاني وعدد الوافدين إلى سوق العمل، لاسيما الشباب والنساء. ويقدم التقرير عددًا من الأفكار الرئيسية، بما في ذلك "تحسين انتقال الشباب إلى سوق العمل" الذي يسلط الضوء على التحديات المرتبطة بالشباب غير الملتحقين بالتعليم أو التوظيف أو التدريب (NEETs) والبطالة بين حاملي الشهادات الجامعية والتي تؤثر سلبا على الشباب من خلال شعورهم بعدم التحفيز وعدم بالرضا عن النفس، بالإضافة إلى الحد من مساهمتهم الحالية والمستقبلية في الاقتصاد. يمكن قراءة التقرير كاملا عبر الرابط التالي. 

* أطلق المجلس التعاوني لبرشيد في المغرب في 29 آذار / مارس منصة الشباب وريادة الأعمال في إطار المرحلة الثالثة من المبادرة الوطنية للتنمية البشرية. تهدف المنصة إلى تدريب الشباب على ريادة الأعمال للمساهمة في تنمية برشيد والمغرب بشكل عام. كما تساهم المنصة في المبادرة الوطنية المستمرة للمشاركة الاقتصادية وريادة الأعمال، وتربط الشباب بالخبراء والمتخصصين في المجال.

* فوض رئيس الحكومة المغربي وزير الداخلية للتوقيع على قرارات تمديد سن التقاعد لموظفي السلطات الترابية المسجلين في نظام التقاعد المدني. وأثار القرار مناقشات بين الموظفين والنقابيين وكذلك حاملي الشهادات. ويعتقدون أن هذا القرار من شأنه أن يسهم في رفع نسبة البطالة بين المؤهلين وحملة الشهادات، خاصة إذا كان هناك عدد كبير من الموظفين المستفيدين من هذا القرار.

* أشاد الملك عبد الله الثاني ملك الأردن بالروح الريادية للشباب الأردني، مؤكدا على أهمية المشاريع الصغيرة والمنزلية وبرامج التشغيل الذاتي في مكافحة البطالة. واطلع جلالته برفقة الملكة رانيا على منتجات عدد من الشباب والشابات في مختلف المحافظات، الذين كانوا قد تلقوا التدريب اللازم من خلال مبادرة "الشباب المنتج" التي أطلقها الديوان الملكي الهاشمي عام 2019. وقال الملك أنه يجب تسليط الضوء على تجارب هؤلاء الشباب بشكل أكبر لتشجيع الشباب الآخرين على الاتجاه بشكل استباقي إلى ريادة الأعمال.

* صرح الوزير الأردني للاقتصاد الرقمي وريادة الأعمال أحمد الهناندة في 31 آذار / مارس أن الوزارة بدأت دراسة ووضع الأسس لإطلاق مشروع تشغيل الشباب في شركات الريادة الرقمية وتكنولوجيا المعلومات بميزانية قدرها 28 مليون دولار. سيستهدف المشروع الشباب من حديثي التخريج – الذين أنهوا دراستهم الجامعية في السنوات الثلاث الماضية – وستساهم الحكومة بنسبة 50٪ من رواتبهم لمدة 6 أشهر في هذه الشركات. ومن المتوقع أن يبدأ المشروع في آيار المقبل.

* في 30 آذار مارس التقى وزير الدولة الكويتي لشؤون الشباب مع مجموعةWTE الألمانية لمناقشة فرص توظيف الشباب في إطار مشروع "صناع العمل" ضمن خطة التنمية للدولة. وأعلن الوزير عن فتح شواغر في مدينة أم الحيمان لتوظيف الشباب في محطة الصرف الصحي فيها.

* كشفت جامعة الإمارات، بالشراكة مع جمعية معاً، في 30 آذار / مارس أن الشباب الذين تتراوح أعمارهم بين 18 و 34 عامًا يشكلون 47٪ تقريبا من إجمالي عدد رواد الأعمال الاجتماعيين النشطين في الإمارات العربية المتحدة. كما أطلقت جمعية معاً مؤخرًا حاضنة لريادة الأعمال الاجتماعية للارتقاء بالمشاريع الناشئة

* أطلقت جمعية إنجاز العرب منتدى "جاهز" الافتراضي في الفترة ما بين 30 و 31 من آذار / مارس لتعزيز مهارات التوظيف لدى الشباب العربي ودعمهم في خلق فرص ريادة الأعمال. وشارك في المنتدى كل من لينكدإن، مايكروسوفت، ام بي سي، نيستليه، شنايدر ايليكتريك، وكوكا كولا، بالإضافة إلى حضور آخرين.

* ستطلق مجموعة الاتحاد للطيران تحدي الاتحاد في إطار برنامج ريادة الأعمال الشبابية التابع لشركة ستارت أبو ظبي لإيجاد حلول مبتكرة لمواجهة تحديات الاستدامة المتعلقة بإدارة النفايات. وكان البرنامج قد ساهم حتى الآن في تطوير 300 من رواد الأعمال الشباب في الإمارات العربية المتحدة، وقد قام العديد منهم بدمج أعمالهم والمشاركة في مشاريع مهمة.

* في 2 نيسان / أبريل، أعلنت وزارة التشغيل والشباب والرياضة الموريتانية أنها تعمل على استراتيجية واعدة لمعالجة البطالة من خلال التركيز على إعداد الشباب لسوق العمل.

Conflict

* Al-Ahed newspaper reported on March 30 that Iran’s Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned young Iranians of the influence of the “enemy” and their efforts in deviating Iranian youth from the revolution’s track. He also urged youth to be wary of the enemy’s plans that aim to discourage youth to deviate them from the goals of the revolution. 

* AP News reported on April 1 that Palestinian activist Rami Aman was offered an unconventional ultimatum: to divorce his wife (the daughter of a Hamas official) and he would be free. Aman was tortured and interrogated for months in a Hamas prison, called “the buss”. Aman was eventually forced to sign the divorce papers. Aman was imprisoned for an online meeting an Israeli peace activist on Zoom.

* ذكرت صحيفة العهد في 30 آذار / مارس أن آية الله علي خامنئي حذر الإيرانيين الشباب من تأثير "العدو" ومن جهودهم في إبعاد الشباب الإيراني عن مسار الثورة. كما حث الشباب على توخي الحذر من مخططات العدو التي تهدف إلى ثني الشباب عن الانحراف عن مسار الثورة.

* أفادت وكالة أسوشيتد برس للأنباء في 1 أبريل / نيسان أن الناشط الفلسطيني رامي أمان تلقى إنذارًا غريبا: في حال قام بترك زوجته (ابنة مسؤول في حماس) فإنه سيتم إطلاق سراحه. وتعرض أمان للتعذيب والاستجواب لشهور في سجن تابع لحماس يسمى "باص". أُجبر أمان في النهاية على التوقيع على أوراق الطلاق. وكان أمان قد سجن بسبب لقاء عبر الإنترنت مع ناشط سلام إسرائيلي عبر منصة زوم.

Education

* On March 30, Alghad newspaper reported that the Jordanian “Poor and Distinguished Student Welfare Association” launched the “Youth Endeavour” Initiative that aims to support productive projects through financial and logistical support for youth to enable them to address their financial concerns and alleviate themselves and their families from terrible livelihood conditions. This initiative adds to the Association’s work in support disadvantaged young Jordanians, as it has already trained 1000 students and provided 160 full scholarships in Jordanian universities 

* The University of Qatar Center for Youth Scholars held on March 31 the Third Forum for Youth Researchers under the title “Identity and Cultural Tourism: Toward Sustainable Culture and Heritage.” The Forum, attended by many young researchers from Qatar, Oman, Morocco, Algeria, and Libya, aimed to enhance youth’s research capacity in the field of studying identity and heritage.

* أفادت صحيفة الغد في 30 آذار / مارس أن جمعية "رعاية الطالب الفقير والمتميز" الأردنية أطلقت مبادرة "همة شباب" التي تهدف إلى دعم المشاريع الإنتاجية من خلال الدعم المالي واللوجستي للشباب لتمكينهم من معالجة همومهم المالية والتخفيف عن أنفسهم وعن عائلاتهم من الظروف المعيشية الصعبة. تضاف هذه المبادرة إلى عمل الجمعية في دعم الشباب الأردني المحتاج، حيث قامت سابقا بتدريب 1000 طالب وقدمت 160 منحة دراسية كاملة في الجامعات الأردنية

* نظم مركز جامعة قطر للعلماء الشباب في 31 آذار / مارس المنتدى الثالث للباحثين الشباب تحت عنوان "الهوية والسياحة الثقافية: نحو ثقافة وتراث مستدامين". ويهدف المنتدى، الذي حضره العديد من الباحثين الشباب من قطر وعمان والمغرب والجزائر وليبيا، إلى تعزيز قدرات الشباب البحثية في مجال دراسة الهوية والتراث.

Environment

* The Youth and Sports Committee in the Egyptian Parliament discussed on March 30 the fate of a youth center that cost the budget 6 million Egyptian pounds ($382,000) but has become a waste dump after the Ministry decided to close it. The center, located in Bani Obeid district, served over 30,000 young men and women. 

* On April 1, the Emirate News Agency reported that the UAE, Jordan, and the Netherlands are working together to spotlight water, energy, and food security in a high-level summit on this endeavor to be held during Expo Dubai in January 2022, which will combine policy-makers with solutions to the challenges in these resources. Youth are expected to take a central role in this endeavor as the prime stakeholder to the implications of these challenges in the future. They will engage in roadshows, and youth ambassadors will be declared in the summit. 

* On April 2, YLE Foundation in Egypt announced the completion of the first pilot phase of the Environmental Pioneers Program for 70 young trainees on five topics: sustainable development, climate change, biodiversity, waste management, and renewable energy. 

* The President of the Conference of the Parties (COP) under the UNFCCC, Alok Sharma, stated on April 2 that youth across the world will be given the opportunity to develop proposals for the pre-COP 26 in Milan and COP26 in Glasgow. This came in a meeting with the Arab Youth Climate Movement Qatar (AYCMQA) with Sharma.

* ناقشت لجنة الشباب والرياضة في مجلس النواب المصري يوم 30 آذار / مارس مصير مركز للشباب كان قد كلف الميزانية 6 ملايين جنيه مصري (382 ألف دولار) لكنه أصبح مكب نفايات بعد أن قررت الوزارة إغلاقه. المركز الواقع في منطقة بني عبيد يخدم أكثر من 30 ألف شاب وشابة.

* في 1 أبريل / نيسان، أفادت وكالة أنباء الإمارات أن الإمارات والأردن وهولندا تعمل معًا لتسليط الضوء على المياه والطاقة والأمن الغذائي في قمة رفيعة المستوى بشأن هذا المسعى ستعقد خلال معرض إكسبو دبي في يناير 2022، والتي ستجمع صانعي السياسات لتقديم حلول للتحديات المتعلقة بهذه الموارد. ومن المتوقع أن يلعب الشباب دورًا مركزيًا في هذا المسعى بصفتهم أصحاب المصلحة الرئيسيين في تداعيات هذه التحديات في المستقبل، كما سيشاركون في جولات ترويجية وسيتم الإعلان عن سفراء الشباب في القمة.

* في 2 نيسان / أبريل، أعلنت مؤسسة شباب بتحب مصر الانتهاء من المرحلة التجريبية الأولى من برنامج رواد البيئة لـ 70 متدربًا شابًا في خمسة مواضيع: التنمية المستدامة، والتغيرات المناخية، والتنوع البيولوجي، وإدارة النفايات، والطاقة المتجددة.

* صرح رئيس مؤتمر الأطراف (COP) بموجب اتفاقية الأمم المتحدة الإطارية بشأن تغير المناخ، ألوك شارما، في 2 نيسان / أبريل أنه سيتم منح الشباب في جميع أنحاء العالم الفرصة لتطوير مقترحات لمؤتمر الأطراف 26 في ميلانو ومؤتمر الأطراف 26 في غلاسكو. وجاء ذلك في لقاء مع حركة الشباب العربي للمناخ في قطر مع شارما.

COVID-19

* The Egyptian Ministry of Youth and Sports, in collaboration with the JICA and Egypt’s Generations, launched a program titled “Awareness is Life” on March 28 which looks to raise awareness on the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The program trains youth on how to take precautions and how to make critical decisions in this difficult period. 

* Dabanga reported on March 30 that there is an “alarming” surge in COVID-19 cases in Sudan, especially among youth, and the Sudanese authorities are considering strict measures and closures. The authorities attributed this rise to a lax attitude of many people who have abandoned the precautionary measures of wearing masks and social distancing. 

* AP News reported on March 31 that current US President Biden is increasing US assistance to Palestine, especially vulnerable Palestinians to support their efforts against the COVID-19 pandemic. AP News also reports that Biden allocated other funds in economic support to Palestine as part of his policy to “regain their trust and goodwill”. 

* In a recent study conducted by Youth Charter Alliance in Humanitarian Action, more than 90% of students worldwide have been distanced from their schools and universities due to the ongoing global pandemic. The study, published by Al-Arabi Al-Jadeed, asserts that this distancing has long-term implications and repercussions beyond education, as it leads reduced confidence in the future, increased attrition rate, and denying youth support and access to social resources, especially among those with special needs. The study adds while social distancing and quarantine is safe, they do lead to other forms of risks, such as addiction to social media and the internet and facing cybercrimes and harassments. 

* On April 1, the Jordanian Minister of Youth Mohammad Al-Nabulsi participated in a virtual conference for MENA ministers organized by OECD under the title of “Designing the Recovery Map in the MENA Region after COVID-19”. Al-Nabulsi spoke that the ongoing pandemic exacerbated the challenges youth face in Jordan and in the world as a whole, but youth have showcased their voluntary spirit and participated in numerous efforts to address the crisis, including an initiative that dedicates 500 youth volunteers as a first stage to support national efforts in stopping the spread of COVID-19. Al-Nabulsi also indicated that the Ministry will launch a Virtual Youth Center in the upcoming days, which will include all programs and activities implemented by the Ministry along with many advantages.

فايروس كورونا

* أطلقت وزارة الشباب والرياضة المصرية، بالتعاون مع جايكا ومؤسسة أجيال مصر، برنامجًا بعنوان "الوعي حياة" في 28 آذار / مارس والذي يتطلع إلى زيادة الوعي بشأن جائحة فايروس كورونا. يقوم البرنامج بتدريب الشباب على كيفية اتخاذ الاحتياطات وكيفية اتخاذ القرارات الحاسمة في هذه الفترة الصعبة.

* ذكر موقع دبنقا في 30 آذار / مارس أن هناك تصاعدا "مقلقا" في حالات الإصابة بفيروس كورونا في السودان، خاصة بين الشباب. وتدرس السلطات السودانية حاليا إجراءات صارمة وتنفيذ سياسات الإغلاق. وعزت السلطات هذا الارتفاع إلى تراخي كثير من الأشخاص الذين تخلوا عن الإجراءات الاحترازية المتمثلة في ارتداء الكمامات والتباعد الاجتماعي.

* أفادت أسوشيتد برس في 31 آذار / مارس أن الرئيس الأمريكي الحالي بايدن زاد من المساعدة الأمريكية لفلسطين، وخاصة الفلسطينيين المعرضين للخطر لدعم جهودهم ضد جائحة فايروس كورونا، كما أفادت الوكالة أيضًا أن بايدن خصص أموالًا أخرى للدعم الاقتصادي لفلسطين كجزء من سياسته "لاستعادة ثقتهم وحسن نيتهم".

* في دراسة حديثة أجراها تحالف ميثاق الشباب في العمل الإنساني، ظهر أن جائحة فايروس كورونا أبعدت أكثر من 90٪ من الطلاب في جميع أنحاء العالم عن مدارسهم وجامعاتهم. وتؤكد الدراسة التي نشرتها العربي الجديد أن هذا التباعد له تداعيات بعيدة المدى تتجاوز التعليم، حيث يؤدي إلى تراجع الثقة في المستقبل، وزيادة معدلات التسريب، وحرمان الشباب من الدعم والوصول إلى الموارد الاجتماعية، خاصة بين ذوي الاحتياجات الخاصة. وتضيف الدراسة أنه في حين أن التباعد الاجتماعي والحجر الصحي آمنان، إلا أنهما يؤديان إلى أشكال أخرى من المخاطر، مثل الإدمان على وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي والإنترنت ومواجهة الجرائم الإلكترونية والمضايقات.

* شارك وزير الشباب الأردني محمد النابلسي في مؤتمر افتراضي لوزراء الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا نظمته منظمة التعاون الاقتصادي والتنمية تحت عنوان "تصميم خريطة التعافي في منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا بعد كورونا" في 1 أبريل. وتحدث النابلسي عن استمرار الوباء في تفاقم التحديات التي يواجهها الشباب في الأردن والعالم بأسره، لكن الشباب أظهروا روحهم التطوعية وشاركوا في العديد من الجهود لمواجهة الأزمة، بما في ذلك مبادرة تكرس 500 متطوع شاب لدعم الجهود الوطنية لوقف انتشار فايروس كورونا. وأشار النابلسي إلى أن الوزارة ستطلق مركز شباب افتراضي في الأيام المقبلة، والذي سيشمل جميع البرامج والأنشطة التي تنفذها الوزارة إلى جانب العديد من المزايا الأخرى.

Politics and Political Engagement

* Palestine is about to hold its first legislative and presidential elections in 15 years, and this is a tremendous opportunity for Palestine youth aged 18-30, who comprise near 22% of the total Palestinian population and 40% of those able to vote, to play a central role. The Media Line News reported on March 16 the work done by Sharek, a youth-focused organization in the upcoming elections, to ensure proper engagement of youth who have been traditionally overlooked when it comes to elections and policymaking in Palestine. With unemployment around 30%, and youth Palestinians with university degrees unable to find relevant jobs, youth are hoping that the upcoming elections see their participation and engagement and addresses their challenges.

* Amad published on March 25 an article discussing the upcoming elections in Palestine, 15 years after its last elections in 2006. The article focuses on Palestinian youth whose rights were violated during those years, as their political participation was restricted, and they continue to face major socioeconomic challenges. The upcoming elections bring a lot of hope of young Palestinians who, according to the Elections Committee, make approximately 50% of registered voters. Additionally, many young Palestinians have already enrolled in electoral lists. For example, youth make up 56% of the first Democratic Front List under the name of “Democratic Change”, as women represent 36% of the same list.

* Francheval reported on March 21, that young Tunisian activists denounce the security pressure they face. The report told stories of multiple young men and women who have become under constant security surveillance, and some of them fear for their friends, as one young Tunisian said that he has changed homes 3 times in recent months and stopped seeing some of his friends to make sure they remain safe. Demonstrators affirm that Tunisia has made major advances over the past 10 years, but there remains some work to be done, particularly when it comes to reforming the police and the judiciaries. Some activists feel that they could get arrested at any point, and they fear that these events could result in limiting freedoms in the country, as they could face anywhere between days or years in jail, and that remains on their records, limiting their abilities to get jobs.  

* On March 22, Monte Carlo published that Abdul-Hadi Mabrouk wrote in Al-Arabi Al-Jadeed that there is a major gap between youth and political elites – whether ruling and oppositions in Tunisia. This gap is manifested in the demonstrations in Tunisia over the past few weeks along with the results of various polls. With the major economic challenges and the global health crisis, Tunisian youth are suffering from shocks and disappointments, and they feel rejected.

* On Wednesday March 24, a number of Libyan activists announced the launch of the Popular Herak on the 24th of each month, in preparation of the general elections. The declaration clarified that this popular movement is not connected to any ideology, person, or faction, but it is a civil and peaceful Herak in Libya, led by Libyan youth who believe in peace and democratization. The statement also urged the High National Elections Commission (HNEC) to re-register voters according to a new mechanism that adopts on personal identification cards as a complementary measure and called for a reduction in the number of horizontal polling stations. The statement stressed that they did not waive their natural right to demand that the presidential and parliamentary elections be held on time.

* The Middle East Monitor reported that Algeria will have new legislative elections following the dismissal of the Algerian Parliament on March 11, 2021, with elections are expected to take place on June 12, 2021. This dismissal comes in conjunction with a variety of reforms enacted by the Algerian President along with the release of some 60 activists of the Hirak Rif Movement who were jailed over the past two years. The 2019 presidential elections saw a low turnout rate, particularly among youth. The upcoming legislative election is expected to witness much higher turnout rates, as the elections will likely illustrate Algerians’ approval of Tebboune’s policies thus far.

* On March 17, LBC reported that youth of the Free Patriotic Movement in Lebanon held a protest near the Lebanese Central Bank in Jounieh. They indicated their disappointment from the ongoing financial crisis, and they stated that they reject the financial and monetary policies of Riyadh Salameh the Governor of the Lebanese Central Bank, point that he is responsible for the collapse of the Lebanese Lira.

* Mohammad Al-Gharas from Morocco (a member of the political office for the Popular Movement Political Party) was selected to preside over the Liberal Freedom Network, which held its first and formative meeting in Jordan on the 21st of March attended by liberal political parties from the MENA region. The Network seeks to enhance the global values of freedom, rule of law, democracy, free market economy, and economic development in addition to working on developing political parties through counseling and capacity building practices as well as increasing MENA’s participation in global exchanges.

* On March 17, BBC Arabic aired an episode of “Duniana”, which focused on the question of whether the Herak in many countries in the region can reinstate hope among youth. Young Algerians, Tunisians, Lebanese, and Iraqis have marched the streets again despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and government imposed lockdowns. The show discussed that factors such as rising youth unemployment, absence of confidence in decision-making, the absence of youth representation in decision-making, and insecurity, have all led to these protest movements in addition to migration waves, illegally in some instances. Young female activists: Ferena Al-Amil (Lebanon, Sara Al-Aam (Algeria), Maryam Sawalhiyah (Tunisia), Yafa Al-Masri (Palestine), and Diana Faraj (Iraq) all weighed in during the episode.

* Saraya News in Jordan published a letter by Assembly of the Jordanian Youth Lawyers on March 25, days following the medical crisis in Al-Salt Hospital, which resulted in the death of a number of patients due to severe shortages in oxygen. The Assembly wrote that their mission at this stage reflects their position in demanding relevant solutions that correspond to His Majesty’s vision in his discussion papers. They added that their position stems from the principle that we must all bear the responsibility and on the basis of His Majesty the King’s resounding phrase, "enough is enough."

* On March 24, the Zarqa Youth Directorate in Jordan along with its various Youth Centers carried out a number of youth activities, including a workshop for developing the skills of youth toward participating in the upcoming Governorate Council Elections, which was attended by 20 young people from Zarqa over Zoom. The workshop defined the roles of Governorate Councils along with their importance and goals, and it looked to raise the participants’ awareness on the importance of participating in the elections.

* Arab News reported on March 25, that the Turkish police detained 12 students from a major university in Istanbul during protests. This is an addition to about 600 other detainees following protests in Bogazici in January, which spread in Istanbul and other cities in February after clashes with the police. The Bogazici Resistance student group said that the 12 students who were detained were protesting against a university investigation into a student for carrying a rainbow flag during the demonstrations in February.

* The Iran Human Rights Monitor (HRM) reported on March 25, that an Iranian young man who awaits finger amputation in an Iranian prison has been sentenced to additional four years in prison in addition to 80 lashes without court hearing for charges of disrupting prison order, which could refer to his several suicide attempts and hunger strikes. Initially, the young Iranian was convicted for a robbery in 2019 following confessions he made under torture. He said he was tortured into accepting charges he did not commit.

* The National Bloc Party in Lebanon held a wide meeting for political party members in which it announced the Youth and Students Sector. The Party seeks to mobilize youth in overcoming the entrenched influence sectarian factions have on politics and on people. The meeting discussed that youth are the future of the Bloc and that the Bloc will be working on addressing their political and socioeconomic demands

* The Ministry of Youth and Sports in Egypt announced the start of first of the activities of the activation camp for parliamentary cadres to spread the parliamentary and political work in Egypt’s youth centers, which will start on this coming Sunday (March 28) until the first of April, in the youth city of Port Said, with the participation of 100 parliamentary cadres, graduates of the national program for parliamentary cadres.

* The African Leadership Institute praised the Moroccan Youth Shadow Government as one of the best youth initiatives in Africa in its report on “the Most Important Youth Examples in Engaging African Youth in Public Policy”. The report provided a number of recommendations to overcome the obstacles that prevent youth from engaging in public life.

* The Coordination for Youth Parties and Politicians held on March 25 a discussion event on ClubHouse under the title of “Empowering Youth in Egypt between Reality and Expectations”. The event discussed the importance of empowering youth to develop the state, how to train youth and their implications on development, how to highlight Egypt’s experience in empowering youth, the role of youth forums in rebuilding state-society trust, whether youth empowerment is a reality or just a slogan, the prospects for socioeconomic empowerment, youth’s opportunities in the future under local councils and executive leadership positions, and the role of the Parliament to continue on what the state started in terms of youth empowerment.

* نشرت مونتي كارلو في 22 مارس أن عبد الهادي مبروك كتب في العربي الجديد أن هناك فجوة كبيرة بين الشباب والنخب السياسية - سواء الحاكمة أو المعارضة في تونس. تتجلى هذه الفجوة في التظاهرات التي شهدتها تونس خلال الأسابيع القليلة الماضية إلى جانب نتائج استطلاعات الرأي المختلفة. ومع التحديات الاقتصادية الكبرى والأزمة الصحية العالمية، يعاني الشباب التونسي من الصدمات وخيبات الأمل ويشعرون بالرفض.

* أعلن عدد من النشطاء الليبيين، الأربعاء 24 مارس، انطلاق الحراك الشعبي في يوم 24 من كل شهر، استعدادًا للانتخابات العامة. وأوضح البيان أن هذا الحراك الشعبي ليس مرتبطًا بأي أيديولوجية أو شخص أو جهة معينة، ولكنه حراك مدني وسلمي في ليبيا، بقيادة شباب ليبي مؤمن بالسلام والديمقراطية. كما حث البيان المفوضية العليا للانتخابات على إعادة تسجيل الناخبين وفق آلية جديدة تعتمد على بطاقات الهوية الشخصية كإجراء تكميلي، ودعا إلى تقليص عدد محطات الاقتراع الأفقية. وأكد البيان أنهم لم يتنازلوا عن حقهم الوطنية في المطالبة بإجراء الانتخابات الرئاسية والبرلمانية في موعدها.

* أفاد ميدل إيست مونيتور أن الجزائر ستجري انتخابات تشريعية جديدة بعد إقالة البرلمان الجزائري في 11 مارس 2021، ومن المتوقع إجراء الانتخابات في 12 يونيو من نفس العام. وتأتي هذا الإقالة بالتزامن مع مجموعة متنوعة من الإصلاحات التي أعلنها الرئيس الجزائري بالإضافة إلى الإفراج عن نحو 60 ناشطا من حركة حراك الريف اعتقلوا خلال العامين الماضيين. شهدت الانتخابات الرئاسية لعام 2019 نسبة مشاركة منخفضة، خاصة بين الشباب. ولكن من المتوقع أن تشهد الانتخابات التشريعية المقبلة معدلات إقبال أعلى بكثير، حيث من المرجح أن توضح الانتخابات موافقة الجزائريين على سياسات الرئيس الجزائري حتى الآن.

* نشرت سرايا نيوز في الأردن رسالة تجمع محامو شباب الأردن في 25 آذار، بعد أيام من المأساة الطبية في مستشفى السلط، والتي أدت إلى وفاة عدد من المرضى بسبب نقص حاد في الأكسجين. وتضمنت الرسالة أن مهمة التجتمع في هذه المرحلة تعكس موقفهم في المطالبة بالحلولذات الصلة التي تتوافق مع رؤية جلالة الملك في أوراقه النقاشية. وأضافوا أن موقفهم ينطلق من مبدأ أننا يجب أن نتحمل جميعاً المسؤولية وانطلاقاً من عبارة جلالة الملك "بس لهون كفى".

* نفذت مديرية شباب الزرقاء في الأردن في 24 آذار / مارس شملت مراكزها الشبابية المختلفة، نفذت عددًا من الأنشطة الشبابية، من بينها ورشة عمل لتنمية مهارات الشباب للمشاركة في انتخابات مجلس المحافظة المقبلة، والتي حضرها 20 شابًا وشابة من الزرقاء عبر منصة "زوم". حددت الورشة أدوار مجالس المحافظات وأهميتها وأهدافها، بهدف رفع وعي المشاركين بأهمية المشاركة في الانتخابات.

* أفادت عرب نيوز في 25 مارس، أن الشرطة التركية اعتقلت 12 طالبا من جامعة كبرى في اسطنبول خلال احتجاجات. وتأتي هذه الاعتقالات إضافة إلى نحو 600 معتقل آخر في أعقاب الاحتجاجات في بوجازيجي في يناير/ كانون الثاني السابق، والتي انتشرت في اسطنبول ومدن أخرى في فبراير/ شباط بعد اشتباكات مع الشرطة. وقالت جماعة طلابية في "مقاومة بوغازيتشي" إن الطلاب الـ 12 الذين تم اعتقالهم كانوا يحتجون على تحقيق جامعي مع طالب لحمله علم "قوس قزح" خلال المظاهرات في فبراير / شباط.

* أفاد مرصد حقوق الإنسان الإيراني في 25 آذار/ مارس، أن شابًا إيرانيًا ينتظر بتر بعض أصابعه في سجن إيراني قد حُكم عليه بالسجن لمدة أربع سنوات إضافية بالإضافة إلى 80 جلدة دون جلسة استماع في المحكمة بتهمة الإخلال بأمر السجن، مما قد يشير إلى محاولاته العديدة للانتحار والإضراب عن الطعام. وفي البداية، أدين الشاب الإيراني بالسرقة في عام 2019 بعد اعترافات أدلى بها تحت التعذيب. وقال الشاب إنه تعرض للتعذيب لقبول اتهامات لم يرتكبها.

* عقد حزب الكتلة الوطنية في لبنان اجتماعا واسعا لأعضاء الأحزاب السياسية أعلن فيه عن “قطاع الشباب والطلاب”. ويسعى الحزب إلى حشد الشباب للتغلب على التأثير الراسخ للفصائل الطائفية على السياسة والشعب. وناقش الاجتماع أن الشباب هم مستقبل الكتلة وأن الكتلة ستعمل على تلبية مطالبهم السياسية والاجتماعية والاقتصادية.

* أعلنت وزارة الشباب والرياضة في مصر عن بدء أولى فعاليات المعسكر التنشيطي للكوادر البرلمانية لنشر العمل البرلماني والسياسي في مراكز الشباب في مصر، والذي سيبدأ يوم الأحد المقبل (28 آذار / مارس) وحتى الأول من نيسان / أبريل بمدينة بورسعيد بمشاركة 100 كادر نيابي من خريجي البرنامج القومي للكوادر البرلمانية.

* أشاد معهد القيادة الإفريقية بحكومة الظل الشبابية المغربية كواحدة من أفضل المبادرات الشبابية في إفريقيا في تقريره حول "أهم النماذج الشبابية المساهمة في إشراك الشباب الإفريقي في السياسات العامة". وقدم التقرير عددا من التوصيات لتسهيل العقبات التي تمنع الشباب من الانخراط في الحياة العامة.

Economics and Entrepreneurship

* On March 16, the Middle East Desalination Research Center (MEDRC) in Oman announced the winners of the Omani Youth Researchers in the Field of Water Award, which aimed to encourage researchers to engage in studies related to water. This award was enacted in collaboration between MEDRC and the Dutch Embassy in Omar as well as Omar Al-Zawawi Foundation and Haya Water Company.

* On March 16, the Atlantic Council’s empowerME initiative and the King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies (KFCRIS) co-hosted an event on driving investment in the Middle East region, with prominent speakers and attendees. The event discusses strategies for building regional cooperation to upscale the investment and entrepreneurial ecosystems; the importance of regional cooperation and integration; and the need for policy reform.

* On March 17, News Today reported that youth in the Arab World dedicate about 3 and a half hours daily for social media, according to a survey conducted by the New Media Academy. The survey also finds that 79% of Arab youth rely social media for information, an increase from just 25% in 2015. This increase is attributed to the development in entrepreneurship among enterprises in providing services online.

* On March 18, the Fifth Exhibit For Youth Small Enterprises was held in Alexandria, Egypt promoted by the Local Coptic Orthodox Church and sponsored by Caritas Egypt. 70 young men and women of all backgrounds presented their products, mostly handmade such as garments, furniture, and crafts. The Exhibit focuses on enhancing entrepreneurship among Egyptian youth.

* The International Labor Organization (ILO) published a new book on March 18 under the title “Is the Future Ready for Youth?” in which it illustrates youth employment policies for evolving labor markets. The book asserts that despite their technological capabilities, young men and women have been the single worst hit demographic group in times of crisis, including the COVID-19 pandemic. The book ultimately shifts the discussion from “are youth ready for the future” to the other way around, to essentially alleviate youth from the burden placed by them from the first one. In that case, the discussion moves towards ensuring that policymakers prioritize youth employment, among others. * The Ministry of Youth in Jordan announced on March 21 the winning projects from the Fourth National Summit for Youth Entrepreneurs 2021, which was recently held under the slogan “Entrepreneurship in Sports” and targeted Sports Education university graduates to conduct entrepreneurial projects in the sports sector and encourage young people toward entrepreneurship and create sustainable employment opportunities for youth.

* On March 23, the Governor of Guidimaka in Mauritania started a capacity building workshop for 105 young men and women in the province, funded by the Support for Food Security, Empowerment, and Employment Project, which works on training youth on skills such as gardening, sewing, plumbing, and poultry farming. The project will also provide the youth cohort with small loans to fund their project.

* Under the third stage of Moroccan National Initiative for the Human Development (INDH), the Youth and Social Entrepreneurship Platform was held in Chtouka Ait Baha Province on March 24. The platform aimed to listen to youth, build their capacities, address their aspirations, ease their entry in the labor market, and provide them with relevant opportunities to the projects they seek to implement.

* The National Academy for Training welcomed on March 25 a visiting group of the Youth Party Coordination representing both the House of Representatives and the Senate. The visiting youth were informed of the Academy’s work and future plans, especially in relation to preparing young men and women toward assuming leadership positions in the state. The visiting youth included Hadia Husni, an MP, who is a graduate of the Academy herself. She indicated the impact the Academy had on her political career.

* Over the past week, the “Your Thought, Your Treasure” Initiative’s training courses continued in Egypt, training a number of young Egyptians across all governorates. The initiative aims primarily to prepare young Egyptians for the labor market and provide them with relevant job opportunities across multiple sectors such as the food industry.

* Asyut’s Governor in Egypt launched a training program for youth entrepreneurship to train youth on starting and managing projects. The program will be conducted in 149 villages that are considered most disadvantaged.

* أعلنت وزارة الشباب في الأردن في 21 آذار / مارس عن المشاريع الفائزة في الملتقى الوطني الرابع للرياديين الشباب2021، والذي عقد مؤخرًا تحت شعار "ريادة الأعمال في الرياضة" واستهدف خريجي الجامعات في التربية الرياضية، وذلك لإجراء مشاريع ريادية في قطاع الرياضة وتشجيع الشباب على ريادة الأعمال وخلق فرص عمل مستدامة للشباب.

* في 23 آذار / مارس، أشرف والي كيدي ماغة في موريتانيا على افتتاح ورشة عمل لبناء القدرات لـ 105 شاب وشابة في الولاية، بتمويل من مشروع دعم الأمن الغذائي والتكوين والتشغيل (سافير)، والذي يعمل على تدريب الشباب على مهارات مثل البستنة والخياطة والسباكة وتربية الدواجن. وسيوفر المشروع أيضًا لمجموعة الشباب قروضًا صغيرة لتمويل مشاريعهم.

* في إطار المرحلة الثالثة من المبادرة الوطنية المغربية للتنمية البشرية، أُنشئت "منصة الشباب وفضاء الابتكار الاجتماعي" في إقليم أشتوكة آيت باها يوم 24 آذار/ مارس. وتهدف المنصة إلى الاستماع إلى الشباب، وبناء قدراتهم، وتلبية تطلعاتهم، وتيسير عملهم وتسهيل الدخول إلى سوق العمل، وإتاحة الفرص المناسبة لهم للمشاريع التي يسعون إلى تنفيذها.

* استقبلت الاكاديمية الوطنية للتدريب يوم 25 آذار/ مارس مجموعة وفدا من تنسيقية شباب الأحزاب ممثلين عن كلا من مجلسي النواب والشيوخ. وقد تم إطلاع الشباب الزائر على عمل الأكاديمية وخططها المستقبلية خاصة فيما يتعلق بإعداد الشباب والشابات لتولي مناصب قيادية في الدولة. وكان من بين الشباب الزائر النائبة هادية حسني التي تخرجت من الأكاديمية نفسها. وأشارت إلى تأثير الأكاديمية على حياتها السياسية.

* على مدار الأسبوع الماضي، استمرت الدورات التدريبية لمبادرة "فكرتك، ثروتك" في مصر لتدريب عدد من الشباب المصري في جميع المحافظات. وتهدف المبادرة في المقام الأول إلى إعداد الشباب المصري لسوق العمل وتزويدهم بفرص العمل ذات صلة في قطاعات متعددة مثل قطاع الأغذية.

Conflicts

* UNICEF in MENA reported on March 17 that there is an increase in the number of youth and children who fell victim to violence in the MENA region. The report illustrated that near 38 million children and adolescents are in immediate need for humanitarian support, as the largest percentage in the world. The UNICEF report also added that 50% of all violence cases against youth in the world occurred in 7 countries from the MENA region. In addition to that, unemployment among young men stood at 25% in the Middle East and 29% in North Africa coupled with 40% among young women in the MENA region. UNICEF added that in order to end this trend, governments in the region need to strengthen their relations with their youth populations.

* The International Crisis Group published a new report on March 18 in which it discusses the case for a more Inclusive and effective peacemaking in Yemen. The report asserts that with the US and the UN are pushing for a ceasefire and towards a return to political talks, but these talks must ensure that youth, women, and civil society are included. These groups are currently excluded from any political talks, but they play key roles in local mediation and peacebuilding, and their support would be critical for maintaining any ceasefire and stabilization. * Arab News published on March 23 a report explaining how the Houthis teach Yemeni youth to hate through using graphic violent images. The report also states the Houthis use their publications to indoctrinate young Yemenis into an overtly violent and radical ideology. The report highlights that such actions are hindering peacemaking efforts, and they leave a lasting impact, given the emphasis on ideology.

* On March 24, youth of the Yemeni Socialist Party abroad elected a preparation committee to start preparing and coordinating the founding conference for Youth of the Yemeni Socialist Assembly.

* On March 24, the Egyptian Minister of the Interior participated in the 83rd Summit of the Arab Ministers of Interior. During his speech, he noted that terrorism still poses a major challenge on security and on human rights, and that terrorist organizations still attempt to recruit and target youth through the internet and train them on using weapons and spread rumors to harm their own countries.

* Info Migrants published a report on March 25 discussing the lives of Syrian youth in Turkey. 10 years have passed since the start of the Syrian Revolution, resulting millions of refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs). Of the 3.6 million Syrian refugees in Turkey, over 750,000 are youth aged 15-24 and many of them face prejudice, hate crimes, and racism on daily basis. The report interviewed multiple young Syrians who recalled being subjected to humiliation in the streets. The report concludes with noting that by December 2020, near half million Syrians returned to Syria from Turkey, as many believe that their return may be short-lived given the ongoing conditions in Syria.

* أفادت منظمة اليونيسف في الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا في 17 آذار/ مارس أن هناك زيادة في عدد الشباب والأطفال الذين وقعوا ضحايا للعنف في منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا. وأوضح التقرير أن هنالك ما يقرب من 38 مليون طفل ومراهق بحاجة ماسة إلى الدعم الإنساني، وذلك كأكبر نسبة في العالم. كما أضاف تقرير اليونيسف أن 50٪ من جميع حالات العنف ضد الشباب في العالم حدثت في 7 دول من منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا. بالإضافة إلى ذلك، بلغت نسبة البطالة بين الشباب الذكور 25٪ في الشرق الأوسط و29٪ في شمال إفريقيا إلى جانب 40٪ بين الشابات في منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا. وأضافت اليونيسف أنه من أجل تصحيح المسار، يتعين على الحكومات في المنطقة تعزيز علاقاتها مع سكانها من الشباب.

* نشرت صحيفة عرب نيوز في 23 آذار / مارس تقريراً يوضح كيف يعلّم الحوثيون الشباب اليمني الكراهية من خلال استخدام الصور العنيفة. ويذكر التقرير أيضًا أن الحوثيين يستخدمون منشوراتهم لتلقين الشباب اليمني أيديولوجية عنيفة ومتطرفة وبشكل علني. كما يسلط التقرير الضوء على أن مثل هذه الأعمال تعرقل جهود صنع السلام، ولها تأثير طويل المدى، بالنظر إلى التركيز على الأيديولوجية.

* انتخب شباب الحزب الاشتراكي اليمني بالخارج، في 24 آذار / مارس لجنة تحضيرية لبدء إعداد وتنسيق المؤتمر التأسيسي لملتقى شباب الاشتراكي اليمني.

* شارك وزير الداخلية المصري في 24 آذار / مارس في القمة الثالثة والثمانين لوزراء الداخلية العرب. وأشار خلال حديثه إلى أن الإرهاب لا يزال يشكل تحديًا كبيرًا للأمن وحقوق الإنسان، وأن المنظمات الإرهابية لا تزال تحاول تجنيد الشباب واستهدافهم عبر الإنترنت وتدريبهم على استخدام السلاح ونشر الإشاعات للإضرار ببلدانهم.

* نشر موقع مهاجر نيوز تقريرًا في 25 آذار / مارس يناقش حياة الشباب السوري في تركيا. مرت 10 سنوات على اندلاع الثورة السورية ونتج عنها ملايين اللاجئين والنازحين. ومن بين 3.6 مليون لاجئ سوري في تركيا، هناك أكثر من 750 ألف شاب تتراوح أعمارهم بين 15 و 24 عامًا والعديد منهم يواجهون التحيز وجرائم الكراهية والعنصرية بشكل يومي. وأجرى التقرير مقابلات مع العديد من الشباب السوريين الذين ذكروا تعرضهم للإذلال في الشوارع. ويختتم التقرير بالإشارة إلى أنه بحلول كانون الأول (ديسمبر) 2020، عاد ما يقرب من نصف مليون سوري إلى سوريا قادمين من تركيا، حيث يعتقد الكثيرون أن عودتهم قد تكون قصيرة الأجل في ظل الظروف المستمرة في سوريا.

Development

* The Moroccan Ministry of Youth and Sports and the United Nations signed on an annual program for youth on March 18 to mark the first agreement of its kind for youth in Morocco. The UN, represented by UNFPA, UNICEF, UNPA, and UNESCO will provide technical and financial support for the Ministry for a variety of programs, including the implementation of the National Youth Engagement Plan and to better address the challenges youth face in Morocco.  

* The MENA - OECD Governance Programme announced the opening for accepting applications for the “Our Youth Takes Initiative” initiative for youth-led CSOs from Jordan, Morocco, and Tunisia until March 31st, 2021. The Announcement can be found via the following link.

* Al-Manshiyah Youth Center in Jordan held an e-workshop on March 25 to train 20 young members of the center on “how to write proposals for small projects”. The trainer emphasized the importance of clarity in writing to maximize the opportunity for project to win funding.

* وقعت وزارة الشباب والرياضة المغربية ومنظومة الأمم المتحدة على برنامج سنوي للشباب يوم 18 آذار / مارس وذلك كأول اتفاقية من نوعها للشباب في المغرب. وستقدم الأمم المتحدة، ممثلة بصندوق الأمم المتحدة للسكان واليونيسيف وبرنامج الأمم المتحدة الإنمائي واليونسكو الدعم الفني والمالي للوزارة لمجموعة متنوعة من البرامج، بما في ذلك تنفيذ الخطة الوطنية لإشراك الشباب والتصدي بشكل أفضل للتحديات التي يواجهها الشباب في المغرب.

* أعلن برنامج الحوكمة في منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا - منظمة التعاون الاقتصادي والتنمية عن فتح باب قبول الطلبات لمبادرة "عندما يبادر الشباب" لمنظمات المجتمع المدني التي يقودها الشباب من الأردن والمغرب وتونس. وسيستمر قبول الطلبات حتى 31 آذار / مارس. ويمكن الاطلاع على الإعلان عبر الرابط التالي.

* عقد مركز شباب المنشية في الأردن ورشة عمل إلكترونية في 25 آذار / مارس لتدريب 20 شاباً من أعضاء المركز على "كيفية كتابة مقترحات المشاريع الصغيرة". وأكد المدرب على أهمية الوضوح في الكتابة لتعزيز فرصة المشاريع على الحصول على التمويل.

Education

* On March 21 and 22, the Seventh Round of the Education Interface was held in UAE, with 150 participating universities and educational institutions from the Emirates and abroad. The Education Interface focused on science, technological innovations, and applied research in the realms of education.

* On March 22, the Education Above All Institution under its Program “Qatar for Education Scholarships” established a partnership with Bard University for a joint scholarship program at Al-Quds University for Arts and Sciences in Palestine, with support from the Qatar Fund for Development. This program will provide 399 scholarship opportunities for youth and teachers for the next 8 years, starting in the Spring of 2021. This partnership is an extension of various other partnerships under Qatar for Education Scholarships Program which offers 4,000 scholarships in the MENA region over the next 5 years.

* On March 22 in the UAE, the Culture and Science Symposium and in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and Youth (MCY) held a seminar titled “Book-Tube Youth and the Reality of Reading in the Arab World”, which was attended by a number of young men and women across the region along with other stakeholders. This initiative came in response to many reports stating that Arabs do not read as much compared to other nations around the world. Following these reports, multiple channels dedicated to reviewing books were established on YouTube over the past 4 years.

* عقدت الجولة السابعة من معرض واجهة التعليم في دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة في 21 و 22 آذار / مارس بمشاركة 150 جامعة ومؤسسة تعليمية من الإمارات وخارجها. وركز المعرض على العلوم والابتكارات التكنولوجية والبحث التطبيقي في مجالات التعليم.

* في 22 آذار / مارس، عقدت مؤسسة التعليم فوق الجميع في إطار برنامجها "منحة قطر للتعليم" شراكة مع جامعة بارد لبرنامج منحة مشتركة في كلية القدس للفنون والعلوم في فلسطين، وذلك بدعم من صندوق قطر للتنمية. وسيوفر هذا البرنامج 399 فرصة للمنح الدراسية للشباب والمعلمين على مدار السنوات الثماني المقبلة، بدءًا من ربيع عام 2021. وتعد هذه الشراكة امتدادًا لشراكات أخرى متنوعة في إطار برنامج قطر للمنح التعليمية والذي يقدم 4000 منحة دراسية في منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا خلال الخمسة أعوام المقبلة.

* نظمت ندوة الثقافة والعلوم في الإمارات يوم 22 آذار / مارس وبالتعاون مع وزارة الثقافة والشباب ندوة بعنوان "شباب البوكتيوب وواقع القراءة في العالم العربي"، حضرها عدد الشباب والشابات من جميع أنحاء المنطقة إلى جانب عددا من أصحاب المصالح والمعنيين. وجاءت هذه المبادرة استجابة لتقارير عديدة تفيد بأن العرب لا يقرؤون بنفس القدر مقارنة بالدول الأخرى حول العالم. فبعد نشر هذه التقارير، تم إنشاء قنوات متعددة مخصصة لمراجعة الكتب على اليوتيوب على مدار السنوات الأربع الماضية.

Environment

* On March 22, Greenpeace reported demands for transparency in managing Lebanon’s oil leaking crisis. Lebanon’s Beach Coalition, Waste Management Coalition, Energy Governance Coalition, the Arab Youth for Climate Movement, Green Party of Lebanon, Greenpeace MENA, and Green Mind Association all publicly stated their dissatisfaction for the lack of planning or clear guidance from the Committee appointed by the Prime Minister to coordinate the operations of managing and addressing the crisis of oil leaks that reached Lebanon’s beaches. Despite several weeks have passed since its appointment, the Committee is yet to announce the results of any comprehensive beach surveying activity or the results of testing samples from different areas to estimate the magnitude of pollution and losses for the marine biodiversity, beaches, stakeholders, and local communities. For that, the coalitions demanded more clarity and transparency in the form of a publicly available weekly progress report.

* On March 24, the Egyptian Minister for Migration and Expatriate Affairs conducted a Zoom panel discussion with the Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources and a number of Egyptian students studying abroad under the “MEDCE” Event. The panel discussion focused on Egypt’s water rights along with the complications imposed by the Ethiopian Dam.

* نشرت منظمة غرينبيس في 22 آذار / مارس مطالب بالشفافية في إدارة أزمة تسرب النفط في لبنان. حيث أعلن كل من ائتلاف الشاطئ اللبناني، وائتلاف إدارة النفايات، وائتلاف حوكمة الطاقة، وحركة الشباب العربي للمناخ، وحزب الخضر اللبناني، وغرينبيس الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا، وجمعية الفكر الأخضر عن عدم رضاهم عن نقص التخطيط وغياب الارشادات من اللجنة المعينة التي أنشئت من قبل رئيس مجلس الوزراء لتنسيق عمليات ادارة ومعالجة ازمة التسريبات النفطية التي وصلت شواطئ لبنان. وعلى الرغم من مرور عدة أسابيع على تعيينها، لم تعلن اللجنة حتى الآن نتائج أي نشاط مسح شامل للشواطئ أو نتائج اختبار عينات من مناطق مختلفة لتقدير حجم التلوث والأضرار على النظم البيئية البحرية والشاطئية وعلى المصائد والمجتمعات المحلية وأصحاب المصالح. لذلك، طالبت الائتلافات بمزيد من الوضوح والشفافية على شكل تقرير أسبوعي متاح للعامة.

* عقدت وزيرة الدولة للهجرة وشؤون المصريين في الخارج حلقة نقاشية مع وزير الري والموارد المائية وعدد من الطلاب المصريين الذين يدرسون في الخارج في 24 آذار / مارس ضمن فعاليات مركز وزارة الهجرة للحوار لشباب الدارسين بالخارج "MEDCE". وركزت الجلسة النقاشية على حقوق مصر المائية إلى جانب التعقيدات التي يفرضها السد الإثيوبي.

COVID-19

* On March 18, the Jordanian Minister of Youth Mohammad Al-Nabulsi announced a new youth awareness initiative to support national efforts to limit the spread of the Coronavirus. This initiative will be conducted in partnership with the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, The Royal Health Awareness Society, “Nahnu” Platform – the Crown Prince Foundation, and UNICEF. This initiative is the first awareness initiative by youth in the MENA region, and it looks to activate the role of young people by spreading awareness messages within their communities on how to adhere to health and precautionary measures. It also raises awareness on the importance of the vaccine for the elderly in particular and society in general.

* SciDev reported on March 22 the results of a recent survey conducted in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan, which found that youth in universities who live in urban areas are the most willing demographic segment to undergo clinic trials to assess the effectives of COVID-19 vaccines. They reasoned that they wanted to protect family members from the ongoing global pandemic. Youth also raised some concerns, mostly in regard to negative side effects, research ethics, and lack of trust in major pharmaceutical companies. The SciDev report emphasized the importance of evaluating the extent to which COVID-19 related news shared on social media are true or false, and that medical institutions need to enhance their work when it comes to raising awareness on the matter.

* On March 25, the Yemeni Ministry of High Education, Scientific Research, Vocational and Technical Training urged schools and universities in Eden and other liberated governorates to suspend education based on the decisions of the High Emergency Commission of the Legitimate Government to ensure the safety and health of students, teachers, and staff.

فايروس كورونا

* أعلن وزير الشباب الأردني محمد النابلسي في 18 آذار / مارس عن مبادرة توعوية جديدة للشباب لدعم الجهود الوطنية للحد من انتشار فيروس كورونا. وسيتم تنفيذ هذه المبادرة بالشراكة مع وزارة الصحة، ووزارة السياحة والآثار، ووزارة الصناعة والتجارة، والجمعية الملكية للتوعية الصحية، ومنصة "نحن" التابعة لنوى وهي احدى مبادرات مؤسسة ولي العهد، واليونيسيف. وهذه المبادرة هي أول مبادرة توعوية من قبل الشباب في منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا، وتتطلع إلى تفعيل دور الشباب من خلال نشر رسائل توعوية داخل مجتمعاتهم حول كيفية الالتزام بالإجراءات الصحية والوقائية. كما تعمل على زيادة الوعي بأهمية المطعوم لكبار السن بشكل خاص والمجتمع بشكل عام.

* أفاد موقع SciDev في 22 آذار / مارس عن نتائج استطلاع حديث أجري في مصر والمملكة العربية السعودية والأردن والذي وجد أن الشباب الجامعي الذين يعيشون في المناطق الحضرية هم الشريحة الديموغرافية الأكثر استعدادًا للخضوع للتجارب السريرية لتقييم لقاحات فايروس كورونا. وكان من بين الدوافع لدى هذه الفئة أنهم يريدون حماية أفراد أسرهم من الوباء العالمي المستمر. كما أثار الشباب بعض المخاوف خاصة فيما يتعلق بالآثار الجانبية السلبية بالإضافة إلى بعض الشكوك المتعلقة بأخلاقيات البحث وقلة الثقة في كبرى شركات الأدوية. وأكد التقرير على أهمية تقييم مدى صحة أو خطأ الأخبار المتعلقة بـفايروس كورونا التي يتم مشاركتها على وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي، وأن المؤسسات الطبية بحاجة إلى تعزيز عملها عندما يتعلق الأمر بزيادة الوعي حول هذه المسألة.

* حثت وزارة التعليم العالي والبحث والتعليم الفني والتدريب المهني في حكومة شباب واطفال اليمن في 25 آذار / مارس المدارس والجامعات في عدن والمحافظات المحررة الأخرى على تعليق التعليم بناءً على قرارات اللجنة العليا للطوارئ التابعة للحكومة الشرعية لضمان سلامة وصحة الطلاب والمعلمين والموظفين.
